I just finished this!! Lemme quickly hook you with a tagline:

If New Nightmare was about Robert Englund slowly convincing himself that Freddy was possessing him to stay alive.

And I am not remotely kidding. 'The Reaper' is so clearly Freddy Krueger inspired with his increasingly terrible one liners and his nursery song, his characteristically grizzly voice, etc. And Howard Browning is the blonde-turned-grey-with-age classically trained actor who got typecast as tropey-horror villains after the h u g e success of the Reaper. 😏 Eh? And if that's not enough, Wes Craven and Robert Englund were both explicitely thanked in the acknowledgements.

It was a very fun book!

Candy Cain Kills by Brian McAuley

This is the worst fucking Christmas ever.

Brian McAuley's Candy Cain Kills reads exactly like a bad '90s horror flick... and I mostly mean that as a compliment. The kills are brutal, Candy Cain is a really fun villain, I wanted all of the characters to be slaughtered, and it wholly embraces the silliness of its premise.

Yeah, the characters may be little more than types, but you really don't need anything more than that for a slasher book. And sure, the anti-religion nonsense (and a lot of the prose, in general, really) reads like it's coming from a contrarian teenager trying to get a rise out of their parents. But ultimately that really just makes a lot of the deaths all the more fun. So, y'know... whatever.

This book doesn't redefine the genre; hell, it really doesn't give us anything new, at all. But it's thoroughly enjoyable in its simplicity and brutality, and that's really all I was looking for from this Christmas slasher.
