This is a really lovely Raspberry Pi tricorder At the moment I’m spending my evenings watching all of Star Trek in order. Yes, I have watched it before (but with some really big gaps).

Replica prop builder Brian Mix is obsessed with the 60s sci-fi show Lost in Space, and has built a working analog replica of the computer on board the Jupiter 2 spaceship. He explains how the prop was sourced from a real Burroughs B205 computer, which was also the same one used in the Adam west Batman show!

Adam: Midday brought an email from an acquaintance of mine named Brian Mix. He’s an obsessive prop-maker like yours truly, and we met earlier this year at San Diego Comic Con through a mutual friend. Quickly while talking we discovered overlap in our project interest, and he was able to supply me with some critical photo reference of a prop of surpassing rarity. I mean, NOBODY has this reference. It was very exciting. So when he wrote to say he lived 15 minutes away and did I want to see his shop, my answer was unequivocally yes.
He’s building (among, like me, many many other things) an amazing, all hand-built Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet. I mean, HAND-BUILT. He handcrafted every single finger-numbing piece and part by lovingly following the photo reference (and original blueprint drawings).
The result is pretty astounding. Check out the 90% completed head, replete with an insane vacuum-formed dome. We commiserated as to how difficult it is to order something so delicate as the dome and then to cut into it for the model. When there’s only one piece and it’s so rare and expensive, you definitely measure twice, or more like six times, in order to cut once correctly. (Nov. 23, 2013)
