Liberal Democrats Believe… 38 – Brian Paddick

The Liberal Democrats uniquely want to provide equality of opportunity to everyone, no matter what their social background, ethnic background, sexual orientation or any other irrelevant difference. Uniquely we want to provide everyone with as much freedom as possible, with the least interference as possible from government or the law, with decisions made by local people who know what is best for them and their community.

 That is why I am totally disillusioned, after more than a decade of Labour’s financial mismanagement, restricting civil liberties and creating hundreds of new criminal offences, totally disillusioned with the Tories wanting to restrict privileges to the better off, disregarding the impact of policies on the poor and on the environment, and totally committed to the Liberal Democrats who are the only party I believe are worth voting for and fighting for, despite the coalition!

  Brian Paddick (Twitter @brianpaddick) is a Liberal Democrat peer and a former Deputy Assistant Commissioner in the Metropolitan Police, making him the UK’s most senior openly gay police officer. This was his answer to my questions – what do the Lib Dems stand for and why should people vote for us – when he was standing to be Lib Dem candidate for London Mayor.

Shameless endorsement for Brian Paddick

Everyone living in London should vote for Brian Paddick. No matter what you might think of the Lib Dems right now, he would make a fantastic mayor. Why does the mayoral election have to be some sort of personal vendetta between those two clowns Ken and Boris? 

Some of Brian's super awesome promises: They are actually realistic.

1. Fairer Fares

Brian will help those who can least afford to travel by introducing a One Hour Bus Ticket, 'Early Bird' tube discounts for those travelling before 7.30am and Part-Time Season Tickets so part-time workers get the same discounts as full-time workers.<p>

2. 360,000 New Homes

Brian will tackle London's housing crisis by building 360,000 new homes over 10 years, half of which will be affordable housing.<p>

3. Youth Hubs

Brian will create a network of places for young people to go where they can socialise and get support and advice, giving them a positive alternative to gangs. <p>

4. Keeping You Safe

Brian will use his 30 years' experience as a police officer to bring down crime, tackle racism at the Met and rebuild trust in the police by getting the police and communities working together against the criminals.<p>

5. Cleaner, Greener Transport

Brian will make all London's buses and taxis electric by 2020, as well as most commercial Vans.  Here is a more Tumblr friendly picture to encourage Tumblr types to vote for him:

In all seriousness, this London election really has been some sort of personal battle between Boris and Ken and it has become a joke. Brian Paddick came across very well in all of the mayoral debates, yet people have applied such a stigma to the Lib Dems that they won't give him a chance. 

I predict a BoJo win, but this should be a pretty interesting election what with it being so close and all.
