- Growing up in the Cavanaugh household was not easy, in fact, it was the farthest thing from. You’d been born two years after Tim, making you the baby of the household …though that sentiment seemed to be held only by your older brother.
- As much as he was in and out of prison, you could vividly recall your childhood living alongside the monster that you called your father. You could recall all the bruises, cuts, scrapes. All the yelling and insults that became commonplace in your life. All the wishing for a day when he was arrested for good, a day he just up and left, …a day where he died.
- Tim had always tried to protect you from him the best he could but there was little he could do if your father was intent on “punishing” you. So, while your brother certainly took the brunt of your fathers aggression, you still weren’t completely safe from the man.
- Your brother was your protector, your only real family and the one person who you could depend on; and you were his. You cared for, plotted with, bandaged, and loved each other. Through thick and thin, for better or for worse, you had each others backs.
- So, no matter what decisions your brother made, you had his back.
- As you got older, Tim grew more resentful. He became prone to lashing out; became more prejudiced. And though you still hated that aggressive side of him, you could at least understand why he acted that way. You knew that it wasn’t all his fault, but most of all, you knew he would never hurt you.
- Rather than follow in your brothers; or your fathers, footsteps, you became the opposite. You became shy, kind, patient. You spent your entire life molding yourself into something that was as far from your fathers image as you could be.
- It’s because of this, that you first befriend Brian.
- You were the first person to offer your help as he struggled to navigate his way through the halls on the first day of classes. He likes you the minute you introduce yourself and you him.
- It’s only later that Brian learns “the catch”. That the damn near perfect girl who he’s fallen for almost instantly is actually the sister of the biggest asshole in school. Just his luck.
- Things only get worse when Tim notices the boy hanging around his “kid” sister. Tim doesn’t like any guys becoming friendly with you, least of all older, Jewish guys.
- Now normally, Tim would “have a talk” with whoever was sniffing around you and that would be that, but Brian wasn’t going to give up on having you in his life that easily. He wasn’t going to let your brother win.
- Thankfully though, Brian doesn’t actually want to cause any trouble so the minute you ask to just keep your friendship a secret, he agrees. So you continue to see each other and soon enough, you realize; with great hesitance, that you’re actually falling in love with the boy.
- Now, to any other girl your age, this would have been nothing; maybe a little awkward or nerve-wracking but nothing too serious. To you, it was the worst thing that could happen.
- You knew that if Brian returned your affections; which you were almost certain he did, and you became a couple, you wouldn’t be able to hide it from your brother. And you weren’t ready for how your brother would respond to that news. You weren’t ready at all.
- Like I said before: you’re almost certain Brian loves you just as much as you love him. There’s been more than a few times where you’ve come close to confessing, to kissing, and you’re sure that if you were to do so for real; you wouldn’t be able to refuse a relationship with him. So you try your best to avoid those moments.
- But you can only deny your feelings for so long until you’re forced to confess them. And that very thing happens the night Brian finally learns about the way your father treats you. He tells you he cares about you, that he loves you, and you cant help but tearfully admit the same.
- Knowing that; at least to you, it’s the right thing to do, you tearfully explain everything to your brother and, albeit initially begrudgingly, he accepts your relationship.
- It’s not long after that your father; unfortunately, learns about your secret romance with the boy.
- It all comes to a head the night of homecoming. Brian had asked you to go with him and you’d eagerly agreed, knowing that your father would be out for the night …should have been out for the night.
- Granted, he had been, but just as you were pulling away from your house in Brian's shining red car, you could hear the roar of your fathers motorcycle pulling up behind you.
- You hoped and prayed that he hadn’t noticed you but alas, that wasn’t the case. Midway through homecoming, your drunken father arrived and roughly pulled you from your dance with the boy, cruelly taunting him as he kept you pushed behind him.
- Brian sat and took the abuse up until you tried to intervene and your father took a swing at you. He immediately moved to defend you before your brother appeared, pushing the boy back and pulling you behind him as he finally stood up to your father.
- After everything simmers down and your father retreats from the dance, you run to your brothers side and begin to dab at his bloodied lip, making sure he’s alright as his friends offer their homes to you.
- Soon after, Mickey arrives all bloodied up and everyone readies themselves to get their revenge on Porky. Brian convinces you to hitch a ride with some of the other girls so that you’re not in the line of fire and as you’re buckling up, you take notice of your brother joining the boy in his car.
- As you watch them begin to laugh with each other, you smile to yourself, knowing that you finally, truly have your brothers blessing.
