Hooray for Hat! by Brian Won
Your child will love this story about friendship and how one small act of kindness can brighten someone's day.
Children will enjoy the bright, colorful illustrations. You can ask questions on each page such as, What noise does that animal make? Or, How do you think that character is feeling?
You can also talk about repeating patterns in the storyline and work on sequencing by asking your child to repeat the events back to you.
This is a great book for talking to your child about feelings. Each of the characters start out grumpy, but then they start to feel better. Ask your child questions such as:
What are some things that make you grumpy?
What can make you feel better when you feel this way?
How can you make others feel better when they are grumpy?
The illustrations of this book follow a repeating pattern. Even before your child learns how to read, they can understand the story by studying the pictures. Before reading the story together, you can ask your child to “read” the story to you.
The font and letter size of this book help to communicate emotions. When you read this book aloud, read these words with exaggerated emotion while you point to the text. This will help children understand that what and how we read is related to the letters on the page.
Cut a two inch strip of construction paper long enough to wrap around your child's head. You may have to connect two or more strips together. Tape the strip around your child's head to make a crown.
Cut one inch wide strips of paper and tape or glue these to the top inner side of your child's crown.
Curl the strips around a pencil so they bounce when your child moves their head.
Use stickers or markers to decorate your hat any way you like.
Make a hat for a friend to brighten their day!
