‘Notes on the Gallery Space’ - Brian O’Doherty
29th September 2016
In todays lecture we discussed the facts and opinions of Brian O’ Doherty’s text. I found it extremely educational and insightful. Before reading this text I had not thought more so about the gallery space and the way it looks, than the actual art piece which sits on the walls of the gallery. Its not just the art sitting on the walls; which is the ‘art’, its the whole art exhibition experience.
The ‘bold’ words and meanings are an overview of the text. Furthermore, words that interested me but, text that I do not fully understand the full meaning of; I have collated and put them in a glossary type format.
Archetypal - ‘’An original model or type after which other similar things are patterned; a prototype.’’
Miniaturisation - ‘’To plan or make on a greatly reduced scale.’’
Modernism - ‘’In its broadest definition, is modern thought, character, or practice. More specifically, the term describes the modernist movement in the arts, its set of cultural tendencies and associated cultural movements, originally arising from wide-scale and far-reaching changes to Western society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In particular the development of modern industrial societies and the rapid growth of cities, followed then by the horror of World War I, were among the factors that shaped Modernism. Related terms are modern, modernist, contemporary, and postmodern.
In art, Modernism explicitly rejects the ideology of realism and makes use of the works of the past, through the application of reprise, incorporation, rewriting, recapitulation, revision and parody in new forms. Modernism also rejects the lingering certainty of Enlightenment thinking, as well as the idea of a compassionate, all-powerful Creator.’’
Provocation - ‘’The act of provoking or inciting.’’
Paradoxical - ‘’A statement that seems to contradict itself but may nonetheless be true.’’
Superfluous -’’Being beyond what is required or sufficient.’’
