Ini namanya Pohon Cinta. Kenapa disebut begitu? Btw, it does ring a bell when my friend told me about this. I've heard this bride kidnapping also practiced in Kazakhstan. Terus tadi googling buat mastiin ingatan ik masih bener, ternyata ga cuma di Kazakhstan dan Lombok. Ada bbrp negara accross the globe yang pernah/masih punya tradisi seperti ini . . #bridekidnapping (at Dusun Sasak SADE Rembitan Lombok)
I've heard of this ages ago and read about it, and watched documentaries about it. But the numbers are rising. When I read or watch things like this happening, I remembered this dude that once told me that feminism is not needed anymore because obviously women aren't oppress anymore. #bridekidnapping #feminism #whyweneedfeminism #childbrides #femalegenitaliamutilation #genderequality
Bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan
Bride kidnapping is one of the common issues in Kyrgyzstan. Bride kidnapping considered a forced or arranged marriage. It is an act of abducting a woman to marry her. Bride kidnapping harms the girl physically and psychologically. On the way to the kidnapper’s house, he and his friends might use physical assault towards the girl. When kidnapper brings the girl to his house his relatives exert pressure on the girl in order to force her to marry the guy. Unfortunately, despite the law that forbids bride kidnapping, it is still an ongoing issue in Kyrgyzstan.
Moreover, the number of child marriages is increasing in Kyrgyzstan. Child marriage in Kyrgyzstan is usually a result of bride kidnapping. Many young girls are under pressure and because of their age cannot even say no and refuse to marry the kidnapper. In addition, because of bride kidnapping, there were cases when girls having no idea of what to do commit suicide. This is very sad that because of this act girls lose their hope, give up their dreams, goals and just commit suicide.
Bride kidnapping: a tradition or a crime?
When Kyrgyzstan was part of USSR, bride kidnapping was prohibited and it was considered as a crime. But after the collapse of USSR, when Kyrgyzstan got its independence and became a separate state, bride kidnapping came into practice. People misunderstand the real meaning of kidnapping. When a couple know and love each other but due to some reasons cannot be together, they arrange bride kidnapping and this became a tradition. But later on the concept of bride kidnapping changed and men started to kidnap any random woman and force her to marry him. In this case, this is not a tradition, this is a real crime. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 3, "Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person." Everyone has this right, including all women. But sadly, girls in Kyrgyzstan still being kidnapped and their rights to life, liberty, and security are violated. Article 16 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that: " Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses. " In bride kidnapping marriage is non-consent, it is desired only by men's side. Young girls who are being kidnapped definitely do not agree to marry the guy. But most of the times, their voices, desires, and rights are not considered at all. Their rights are totally ignored by those men who do kidnap and men's friends and families who completely support this idea. Bride kidnapping is a serious crime yet still it is not punished and those who do it, keep on doing it because they are sure that they will not be punished or persecuted. Bride kidnapping might not be considered as a global issue, but because it involves violation of women's rights according to Universal Declaration of Human Rights it should be taken into consideration globally on how to stop bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan.
