Hello family and friends!
We're sending our love from Brazil. We arrived late Tuesday night and so far it has been going wonderfully.
On Wednesday, Sid and I went to Berlitz, the school where I am now taking Portuguese, and we met the staff. That evening we went to a photography exhibit on coffee with Cecilia (Sid's mother) and Marcio (her boyfriend). It was incredible to see photos of the way coffee is grown and processed before being sold in stores.
On Thursday I began my first day of Portuguese lessons and I loved it! I was shocked how much I loved the classes. I've never been a "language" person, but it's great. I'm taking private lessons for 9 hours a day. It's a "super intensive" program. And it is SUPER intensive. The first day, first class, my teacher came in like a bat out of hell. He's name is Fabio and just started spewing off Portuguese nonstop while sipping on Red Bull and bouncing off the walks. I almost passed out from shock, but then I got used to it. He's wonderful!! So so nice and hilarious. He bikes about 20 miles a day to and from school. His energy is great.
The way my classes work is that I have 2 hours with a teacher and then get someone new. I rotate through all the teachers in the school. It's fascinating to speak with the teacher and learn about Brazil from their point of view.
By the end of the day I was exhausted and felt like my head was going to explode.
On Friday I had my second day of classes and again had a lot of fun. By the end of the day I was less exhausted which was nice. But after class, Sid and Dara (my sister-in-law) put me to test by only speaking to me in Portuguese on the ride home. An hour ride in thick traffic. HAHA.
Then Sid, Sandra, Jose (my in-laws) and I went to our very good friend's from NYC's apartment for Shabbat dinner. It was so lovely to be in the company of our dear friends. They moved to Sao Paulo only a few months ago.
Saturday was a fun-filled day. Sid and I swam laps in the morning in the apartment building. Then I got a manicure and pedicure with Sandra. I tried to speak with the manicurists in Portuguese and they were so supportive and nice. They told me I did well.
Then we went to the mall to get a birthday present for Sid's baby cousin. It was his 5th birthday. Obviously, I had to stop at the dog store and fawn over the puppies. The birthday party was a lot of fun. I stuffed my face with brigadeiros (condensed milk + chocolate = most amazing truffles).
After the birthday party, we celebrated Nayara's birthday too (my sister-in-law). I stuffed my face with more brigadeiro :)
