Chucos Suaves for a new generation
(Zoot Suit Review)
By: Mario Bertrand
Many cultures embrace their culture down to the very bone, and the Hispanic community is no exception. They live and breath the dance and music that has influenced them since infancy. Zoot Suit the musical is an incredible demonstration of the love of culture, music, attitude and even political views of the Latino community of the 1940′s. This musical holds groundbreaking history because of writers like Luis Valdez and composers Lalo Guerrero and Daniel Valdez. Zoot Suit is an event to be experienced by both Hispanic and those from other ethnicities.
Set in 1942, Zoot Suit follows a young man named Henry Reina, his family and The 38th Street Gang. Trouble begins to ensue for the Reina family and the gang as they are thought to be responsible for a murder that is committed by a rival gang named The Downy Gang at a local party. Being mistaken by The Downey Gang, they are arrested and tried for the killing. As all the events unfold Reina’s has a so-called consciousness named only “ El Pachuco,” a character that not only helps Henry but he also represents the essence Zoot Suit Life. Unfairly convicted of the murder mainly because of their zoot suit-wearing personas their sentence is life in San Quintin. Back at home in Los Angeles, so-called Zoot Riots occur because of racial tensions of World War II. Eventually, Henry Reina is released and returned home to his family because of the efforts of his lawyer Goerge and activist writer Alice.
Originally premiered in 1978, Zoot Suit became one of the greatest pieces of musical theater in both American and Chicano theater. The play sold out in only two days for its ten-day release. Moreover, the musical only ran out of tickets again for its second run. The show was revived again in April 2008 for its 30th anniversary and then again for the 50th anniversary of Center Theater Group.
The essence and soul have not lost a single drop of Hispanic blood. The play has a mix of different races for their respective roles; each character is excellent to beginning to end. Mastery of the craft is the only thing seen despite announcing right before the play that parts of the musical were still being worked out. Demian Bichir’s portrayal of the iconic Pachuco was a force to be reckoned. He commands the stage with his presence and top-notch acting that he made you believe he was not just a meek character but the soul of both of the musical and audience. After the charismatic appearance of “El Pachuco,” the musical explodes with a massive musical number that only an audience member to appreciate in a live setting. Booming with charm, excellent choreography, music, and dance it was able to put a huge smile on my face. Moments of Latino culture and family life capture the real life Latinos have with their brothers, sister, fathers, friends, and even their mothers. However, these moments do not take away the experience if an audience member is not Latino. On the contrary, Luis Valdez’s writing is engaging from begging to end. Sure the understanding of the musicals slang would help, but everyone attends to watch a great story unfold.
Zoot Suit is a play that has so much history behind it that both Hispanic and other ethnic communities can enjoy. This musical lives and breathes the essence of the being Latino but it does not sacrifice a great story that everyone can enjoy. Zoot Suit the musical is an incredible demonstration of the love of culture, music, attitude and even political views of the Latino community of the 1940′s. This play is one you cannot miss! Zoot Suit is in Los Angeles from now until March 26, 2017.
