Coco, the Brim Hat Witch Spoiler tagged since it does show some stuff from the manga..but her brimmed cap outfit is so awesome, I thought it'd be a great contrast to my other illustration of Coco surrounded by her loved ones🥺

Fragile Peace
"the mighty silverwood, it is said, only takes root in places it finds true comfort"
so... rereading Qifrey's backstory.... SPOILERS FROM HERE ON OUT, 87 TO 94
. . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
it's canon that he was an active experiment- yeah? -> like, he was purposefully put in different situations to either distress him or make him feel safe so that the extents of being a silverwood host could be studied. and those studies were written down somewhere
i'm not sure Qifrey was ever genuinely 'rescued' from the Brims
Lestisse was monitoring how Custas took to his roots, that's also canon and it's how they knew what was going on when the tree receded -> following this logic, Ininia is also being monitored- though she seems to be the only one that was ever actively aware of it
with how often the Brims love to hurt and terrorize Qifrey... I think one of 'em might genuinely be monitoring him too in some way- perhaps through his stolen eye
i don't think he ever truly stopped being their original experiment
Thinking of how qifrey's kids all have a good basis of how they should be treated thanks to qifrey and olly and that's why they consistently refuse to fall for the brimhats shit. They were taught that people should be good to each other, the world should be fair though it often isn't, they are individuals worthy of love, and that they will always have a place to go no matter what. The cult tactics don't work on them 🥰

idk if this is pointed out already but ive been thinking about silverwood as an allegory for post trauma effects. there are many parallels between the ways silverwood and trauma ridden systems operate. at first the silverwood is a compensation for the individual's deficits (lack of limbs) essentially a coping strategy that saves the day, though what is a desperate last resort that temporarily fixes things ends up becoming dysfunctional in the long run, as is the case for post trauma maladaptations. silverwood not only in it's role as a coping mechanism references trauma but the general impact of trauma as well. you may finally feel safe and just as you do you'll be struck with something gnawing inside you, the intrusion of an all encompassing experience. something that writhes under your skin when you feel peaceful with a vague sense of wrongness and inability to have good things, a parasite that will take over when you feel content again, petrifying, consuming, feeding on your wellness, something that has long taken root, dwelling, always there, even if you cant pinpoint it.
i think the panel below demonstrates this well
I'll probably write more about this and expand it later
