it's canon that he was an active experiment- yeah? -> like, he was purposefully put in different situations to either distress him or make him feel safe so that the extents of being a silverwood host could be studied. and those studies were written down somewhere

i'm not sure Qifrey was ever genuinely 'rescued' from the Brims

Lestisse was monitoring how Custas took to his roots, that's also canon and it's how they knew what was going on when the tree receded -> following this logic, Ininia is also being monitored- though she seems to be the only one that was ever actively aware of it

with how often the Brims love to hurt and terrorize Qifrey... I think one of 'em might genuinely be monitoring him too in some way- perhaps through his stolen eye

i don't think he ever truly stopped being their original experiment

and maybe the thing you loved your whole life for its ability to create is also capable of destruction. Maybe the craft you dreamed of honing has dangers and pitfalls and examples of it being used for control and exclusion and hate. But sometimes, not as often anymore, you see it used right. You see it used in a way that reminds you of the wonder that led to you choosing this path in the first place. maybe you can keep that wonder alive too. Anything can be used as a weapon yes but anything can be used to create as well.
