The First Day
It’s the first day of English Literature and everyone is waiting for our professor to come in. The seats are filling up, but I don't like being too crowded so I set my Kanken bag on the seat beside me. I got here ten minutes early, so I already snagged my seat, towards the front and all the way towards the end of the room. I want to be close enough to be attentive, but at the same time not being so close that I can smell what the professor ate for lunch.
I look around to absorb the people around me. Everyone is in small groups meeting and greeting each other, making new long life friends, or possibly enemies. You never know with people: first you meet each other and you try your best to be on that person’s good side. Laugh at all their jokes, because everything they say is so hilarious, of course. You ask each other a million questions, get to know each other, and everything is just wonderful. Until it's not, until you're tired of putting up an act, and you take off the mask you've been showing to each other. The point when you see each other's true colors. I wish I could fast forward to that point, and know exactly how everyone actually is. It would save a lot of my time, but I do have to say I'm guilty of this action as well. I'm a eccedentesiast; just like everyone else, we all hide behind a fake smile.
The professor finally walks in and it takes a whole minute for anyone to notice. I notice her, though, she’s small, about 4’11. She has dark brown hair and has a scary resemblance of Kristen Stewart. She hops onto her desk and stares at the students. and with a slight grin on her face, she looks sweet and content. “Good afternoon class,” she says in the most heartwarming voice you could ever imagine. Everyone stops talking and quickly takes their seats, and takes out their brand new Macbook Pros that their parents probably bought them as a graduation gift. “Welcome to English Literature, my name is Ms. Reed. How was everyone’s summer?”
“Good,” the class says in unison.
“That’s great, I had a wonderful summer as well. My baby girl was born the first of June.
“Aaawww,” the class says in unison.
“Alright, I’ll talk a little bit about myself. Yes, I know I look like Kristen Stewart. You do not have to tell me. No, I don’t have a sexy vampire boyfriend that follows me around everywhere, but I’m team Jacob anyway so,” the class busts out with laughter, I even giggled a little bit too. So she’s sweet and funny, I like her already. “Well for the first lesson we--
A girl bursts in with a frantic look on her face. Why is she so late first day of class? The entire class looks back to see who it is. She feels the heat of the room and her cheeks start to turn red. She frantically looks for a seat to get the attention off herself, but she can’t find one; the class is huge and all the seats are taken. Her cheeks are a cherry red now from her still looking for a seat. I reluctantly remove my bag from the seat beside me and whistle at her, like the poor lost puppy she is. She looks over at me and sees the seat. She rushes towards me, her cheeks are a soft pink now. “Excuse me, sorry. Excuse me, sorry,” she says to the people that she scoots past. She finally gets to the seat beside me and gently sits down. “Thank you,” she whispers to me with a sigh of relief.
Arden
“As I was saying, the first lesson we are going to take on is medieval literature.” The class finally takes their eyes off of me . This is not a good first impression, which makes me feel a knot in my stomach because I love literature and I all I wanted to do this year is get on my teacher’s good side. Now the professor probably thinks I have a habit of being late, but I don’t.
My flight from Arizona got delayed this morning so I had to move into my dorm room later than everyone else, by myself. I had no time to rearrange my room to my liking because class was about to start, so I had to just throw all my boxes on the floor and leave.
I look at the girl next to me and she has her eyes locked on the teacher. I'm happy that she helped me earlier, so I'm interested if she would like to be my friend. Because one, I'm not from around here, and two, I just made an ass of myself in front of everyone. I lean in and say “Hi, I'm Arden, thanks for helping me earlier.”
“No problem, I'm Olivia.”
“I can't believe I came late first day, everything has been so hectic and I just couldn't make it on time. But you helped me there, oh my god I thought I was going to have a panic attack; all those people staring at me,” I say jokingly. She takes her eyes off the teacher and glances at me.
“Well maybe you should manage your time better.” She turns her head back to look at the teacher. I don’t say another word for the rest of class.
