Really, you find hers the dullest? I actually prefer J.K.'s because the exclamation point and its brevity makes it truly feel sudden! J.R.R. Tolkien's bores me to tears. I like her storytelling because it feels vivid and real, like someone describing something that actually happened to them.

Definitely agreed on Adams and Snicket being the funnest/most unique, though.

Whilst I agree with you, I still feel dulled by her style, mostly for cultural reasons, I guess.  Certainly, personal reasons anyway.

The thing with each of the other styles is that I have feelings that come from the style as a whole.  In Tolkien’s case, some of my precious early memories involve my dad reading me The Hobbit so I always feel like I’m being read to whenever I’m reading any passage of his stuff.  For me, there is a comfort to the whole idea of writing have an atmosphere as well as the scenes themselves.

There is also that Rowling’s is the most similar to my own writing style and not by choice.  I’m too much of a wuss to try anything like Adams or Snicket.  I tend to write everything out getting down as much plot and character in the characters I can then adding atmosphere in later.  Only I get fed up during editing.  If I edit too much I often find the story as a whole feels weaker because I get tempted to edit the wrong things.  Even though I doubt that Rowling is doing the same thing and I know that continuing to write more and more the less I’ll have this fault, the similarity is something that could be said to subconsciously bother me.  It’s not something I’ve really thought about until now.

Snicket and Adams I didn’t really come across until I was an adult.  I can vaguely remember my sister reading Hitchhikers but not anything in terms of style.  So when I came across it it feels new and fun.  Even though I don’t have the same nostalgia as I do with Tolkien, I like again that there is a feeling that the whole style is more personal.  Of course Adams and Snicket have an advantage over Rowling and Tolkien in that they aim towards comedy where there it is more acceptable to be personal.  It’s not impossible to find serious works that do use personal styles but it is more accepted at least in English speaking works to be less personal.  To not admit the sillyiness of the idea that people would call Voldemort ‘he who must not be named’ instead of something silly like ‘Voldy’ which lets be honest people would do.  Often realism is surrendered for the sake of ‘not being silly’ and works as a whole are weaker for that.

:D yeah, that is exactly why i love this meme, the challenge of finding as-objectively-as-possible GOOD things about stuff i usually criticize and vice-versa (and separating “things i like/dislike” from “good points/bad points”) :D

Her sassy relationship with her mom in the first few episodes, that snark (the hats argument!!), she was really funny and spunky and fun :D That tiny scene when she opens the fridge in her pink Syhorn Racing outfit with a bandage on her nose might still be amongst my favorite screencaps of the series. [i tried to go looking for it in the first page of my serena tag but couldn’t find it >< … that sure was a trip]

Many adorable scenes with Eureka, and quite often with more character to them (the funny impressions game!!!, Eureka generally being her sassy weird self and less scared/disgusted/shocked than Serena…) than just The Big Sis Protecting The Little Girl (though late-series it was often just that)

She. Canonically. Didn’t feel a desire/happiness to see/make people smile. Until the finale. She canonically didn’t really care about people (and likely Pokémon either) for the entirety of the series. I love that, this is no lie one of my favorite tropes/character traits, give me selfish, self-centered human beings who have issues interacting/caring about other people

The “I don’t have a dream” issue is okay in principle but it was. so badly done. And no, you can’t even say “well it’s just a kids’ show, you can’t expect much subtility”, things like that HAVE been done in Pokémon before and much better :[ it took 40 eps to even SHOW UP, it didn’t hinder her, no one questioned it, she didn’t angst about it except occasionally to be moe, and she just suddenly picked something out of the blue without knowing anything about it but there wasn’t anything about that, either (like idk showing that she’s just a beginner who doesn’t know about the performing world!). Bel was done with more subtlety and realism in the games (she picks something she’s not actually passionate about or good at and eventually changes her mind and that was unexpected and interesting!) with a lot less screentime, Hikari’s self-esteem issues was done better in the anime (she LOST AND LOST AND LOST and it was HER FAULT), heck, even Iris’ APPARENT lack of goal was handled better before she ‘fessed up (very early questioned about it and hinted that she’s hiding something, and when we later got backstory, it retroactively made sense that she wasn’t comfortable sharing her personal dream with people she hadn’t befriended yet, and then at least 3 (4?) separate episodes spaced throughout the series about why she wants to be a Dragon Master and what it really means and she is already good at some things but not all!) – Pokémon can do soul-searching and angst and it can do it well. Serena’s ~searching for a goal in life~  arc… was not.

I know you liked the kiss but i’m sorry it was Bad x’D it’s not only that Satoshi wasn’t expecting it, but she KNEW he wasn’t expecting AND WOULDN’T WANT IT, she STEALS it deliberately, she KNOWS she HAS to surprise him to get it, it’s kzjeklfsjdfkdjf nooooo no no no no. + That and her departing line take away all of what little development she did go through by re-making it all about (her crush on) Satoshi, INCLUDING her ENTIRE goal, suddenly her wanting to be a good Performer IS TO BE INTERESTING TO SATOSHIwould have been okay-ish if it’d been framed as that feeling of wanting to be a better person more “worth” of the person you love, but JUST TO GET SOMEONE’S ATTENTION?? @bringsyouwings Yeah, it was during a mini interview included in the one shot about kurapika's past. But I wasn't sure if he was being sarcastic or hiding what he /really/ wants to do with these characters. Although, kurapika's lack of self-care should be enough of an indication that he wasn't joking. I'm so sad he's tutoring himself, isolating/distancing himself from all those who care about him and letting his feelings of anger and desire of revenge consume his entire being when he could lead a happier life if he chooses to. The worst part is he hates the person he's turning into, but he's putting aside his moral ground, beliefs, and his own principles in order to get the job done. Seeing the battle within himself is heart-wrenching.

How would you picture Hari-san and Fla-chan as humans?

This is a really fun question and something I’ve never seen (or thought of) before! Let’s go.Hari-san: he (yes I imagine him as him and Charizard as a girl) would be a calmer version of Mairin. He wouldn’t be clumsy or all over the place/as hot headed as she is, but he’d be very loyal and curious and supportive and would do anything for his pokés (assuming he’d be a trainer). He would probably be quite short, with green (not Drew green tho but Chespin green) spiky hair and clothes that probably wouldn’t be that different from Mairin’s (no poncho though). If he was a human, I could actually see them as siblings, as weird as it may sound :D I think he would want to be a trainer too and have all kinds of journeys in and outside Kalos.Fla-chan: this is harder because as we all know, this poor baby can only be seen in one episode. But I imagine she’s a sassmaster, being a rather difficult catch and all. A lot of Pokés seem to remind their trainers at least at some level so while Chespie (btw sorry about using the English names, they just come to me more naturally) is calm, I could see her as hot headed/forceful/stubborn as her trainer. When she’s a child, she’d be tiny, maybe even smaller than Mairin, but when she hits the puberty, she’d grow to be tall and graceful like Florges. She’d be strong too, like people around her would think a short girl like her can’t do a thing but she can. She’d have a long, curly, light hair and she’d use a lot of green and pink clothes (more girly than Mairin). She’d always have a lot of flowers around her house. She would probably be a rather competitive trainer, more ambitious than Chespie.(heh how did I end up writing that much? Thanks, this was such a cool ask)

Ah, what a beautiful thought! I love hearing about people's rare favourite Pokemon.

Tropius was one of my greatest discoveries when I played Ruby version as a kid. So intimidating to suddenly find a dinosaur in the super tall grass, but so great to know they’re good with kids and fly. I offset my team’s type balance when I played Platinum years later because Tropius was back and I was so happy!!
