Miss Dixie has been living on the streets for awhile. I worked in news for a long time so I’m not a big fan of people looking into the camera, but I loved her smile and she was so kind. She was at an event here in Bremerton called “Sleep Out”. People slept out in the streets just like her to help raise awareness about the homelessness problem in Bremerton, Washington. Kitsap Rescue Mission had to close down their building because they don’t have the money to update it right now. 

As I mentioned before, I used to work in TV news and at a big newspaper (The Chicago Sun-Times). I’ve covered events like “Sleep Out” with my camera a lot. At the moment, I’m not working in news. I’ve gone back and forth on my feelings of returning to a newsroom. 

I got invited to this event Friday Night to the “Sleep Out”. I watched as a TV news photographer take a few shots of the crowd and leave. I found myself annoyed and frustrated with him because he didn’t talk to anyone, but I also understood why. He probably just wanted to get back to the station and he’s been to a hundred types of events. It’s so easy to get numbed out to these events. It’s easier to get numbed out to the tragedy of it.  

I’m done ranting. (For now). It’s just something I’ve been thinking about this weekend. I’ll be posting more photos this weekend.
