What Preparation Work Is Involved?
A clear, thorough preparation is the foundation of any long-lasting paint job. At Evolve Painting Company – Brisbane, we treat preparation as a professional craft: the better the prep, the better the finish and the longer it lasts. Below is a practical, step-by-step guide that explains exactly what we do — and what you can expect — from quote to final inspection.
1. Initial inspection and scope confirmation
Before any work begins we carry out a detailed site inspection. We assess substrate condition (timber, masonry, metal, etc.), identify any structural or moisture issues, check previous coatings, and note heritage features or access constraints. From this inspection we confirm the scope of work, preferred colours and finishes, and provide a transparent quote and timeline.
2. Project planning and scheduling
Once the quote is accepted we schedule the job taking into account weather, access, and any specialised trades required (carpentry, plastering, etc.). We confirm arrival times, expected duration and a communication plan so you always know who to contact and when.
3. Safety, permits and notifications
We set up a safe work zone and manage all on-site safety requirements. If your property is heritage-listed or work may trigger council requirements, we’ll advise you what approvals might be needed and can liaise with your project manager, builder or heritage consultant as required.
4. Thorough cleaning and surface preparation
Good paint adhesion starts with clean surfaces. For exteriors we use high-pressure washing to remove dirt, mould, flaking paint and salt residue. For interiors we vacuum, wipe down surfaces and remove grease or contaminants. This stage ensures primers and topcoats bond properly.
5. Repair and remediation
We repair and replace damaged materials where necessary: replacing rotten timber, re-bedding loose trims, patching plaster, and treating mould or timber decay. Small structural fixes and remedial work are completed prior to coating so the finish is both attractive and durable.
6. Paint removal, sanding and scraping
Flaking paint and loose material are carefully scraped back and sanded. For older properties where lead paint is suspected we can advise on testing and safe removal procedures, or work alongside licensed contractors where required. All loose dust is removed before priming.
7. Filling, caulking and sealing
Gaps, nail holes and joins are filled and sanded to a smooth finish. Exterior joints, windows and trims are sealed with the appropriate elastomeric caulk to prevent water ingress and to maintain flexibility with temperature changes.
8. Priming and specialist treatments
We prime surfaces with products chosen for the substrate and exposure — timber primers, masonry primers, or specialist epoxy primers for floors. Where needed, we apply anti-fungal / anti-mould treatments or membrane systems for weatherproofing. Correct priming dramatically improves longevity and appearance.
9. Masking and protection
Fixtures, fittings, landscaping and floors are protected using drop sheets, masking tape and temporary covers. We take particular care around glass, hardware and garden beds to avoid overspray and paint damage.
10. Application of topcoats and finishing process
Once preparation is complete, we apply topcoats in the agreed system (typically two coats). Our brisbane painters use techniques that suit the finish — brush and roll for traditional profiles and spray for large, even surfaces. After curing, we do final touch-ups and a quality check to ensure uniform coverage and clean edges.
11. Clean-up, removal of waste and client walkthrough
We leave the site clean and tidy, remove all protective coverings and responsibly dispose of paint waste and packaging. A supervisor completes a walkthrough with you to inspect the work and note any final touch-ups. We’ll explain care and maintenance recommendations for the finishes installed.
12. Warranty, care and follow up
We provide aftercare advice and outline any warranty terms for the paints and workmanship. If issues arise, we prioritise prompt follow-up — our goal is a finish that performs well for years.
Quick client checklist (before our team arrives)
• Remove fragile items and valuables from the work area.
• Move furniture away from walls where possible or cover larger pieces.
• Secure pets and arrange parking/access if possible.
• Make a note of any time constraints or critical access windows.
