Writeblr Discussion: Breaking the Mold?

So, I mentioned before that I posted “Brittle Teeth” on Prolitfic and got some honestly great in-depth feedback on there. I’m really trying to listen to the feedback and fix up the things that need fixing, but there’s one thing that someone said that has stuck in my mind this whole time and I really don’t know how to fix it. The reviewer suggested that while the story is well-written, it doesn’t break the mold when it comes to horror. 

And I think this reviewer is right. 

But how to break the mold? 

When I think about horror, I often think that everything that can be done has been done. Isn’t that why we keep seeing the same horror movie plots over and over and over? The cabin in the woods, the haunted house, the haunted dolls, etc. How, exactly, can I break the mold as a writer of horror? 

I feel that I am doing this with An Entity In Your Midst well enough because of what I feel is a unique adaptation of Eastern European folklore. But it’s not something new, if you know what I mean. It’s something that expands on older concepts and ideas and themes. 

How can we create new, unique horror stories that really break the mold? 

I’d really love all the help I can get with this, peeps, because I really want to make sure my writing continues to improve and develop! ^^ Let me know your thoughts and let’s discuss!

Hello, Writeblr! ^^ It’s been a while since I posted, and before I get started with this update on what I’ve been up to, I just want to say thank you to all of my wonderfully patient followers! I’m so grateful I’ve found such an understanding community.

Alrighty! Let’s get started. 

1. I’ve been focusing my efforts on studies (I’m taking a certification course this summer which has been going great) and work (I’ve been writing and designing a textbook of sorts, along with a variety of other material). It’s mostly these two things that have kept me so busy these past couple of weeks!

2. I’ve had a minor medical problemo that I’m still working through, so that’s something that’s been really taking the wind out of my sails. It’s often hard to concentrate on anything because it’s a bit painful, but I think I’m managing pretty well. (It’s also a big part of why I haven’t been around on Tumblr much.)

3. I haven’t started submitting the final Gothic version of “Brittle Teeth” to any of the magazines and journals that I’d previously wanted to, and I’m wondering if maybe it’s a good idea to share it with my readers for free! ^^ I feel like I have so many other short stories in mind, it might be nice to just have my first serious short story out there for people to read? Will think that through a bit more and keep you all updated ^^

4. My murder mystery project!!! Interestingly enough, out of all the current WIPs I’ve been working on, I’ve turned to my mystery book these days. Maybe it’s comforting to work on it? Anywho, I decided to try out a few versions of it (again) and am currently working on a first-person POV version and comparing it to my third-person POV style and trying to see which one is better. Hopefully this is the last style adjustment I’ll be making because at this point I have so many versions of this book it’s probably in the double-digits.

Hello fellow writers, readers, and friends!! 😄

I wanted to let everyone know what I’ve been up to and what you can hopefully expect in the coming weeks:

I’m creating a WIP intro for Apartment!

I’ve been working on OC intros for: Mila, James, Alex, Ragnar, and a few others. I’m really happy with the OC intro for Mila so far, so that’s the one you’ll get to see very soon.

I’m working on finishing parts 2 of “House of Borzalom” and “Brittle Teeth” as they are unfinished. This is the first time I’ve delved into the whole short story thing, so please give me your feedback because while I'm very familiar with how short stories are supposed to work, the actual writing of them I'd like to get some feedback on.

That being said... I’ve been working on two short story collections! I feel like a short story monster has been unleashed in my brain. I’d love to finish those up and get them published, but we shall see...

I’ll be adding a WIP page for The Fall of the Black Masks, as well as a Status bar at the bottom of the page, just like the one I have for The Pirates of Sissa.

My free editing offer is still open until the 26th of April, so if you have something you would like me to edit and give you feedback on, please do not feel shy to just send me a message and we can work things out from there. 

Finally, I’ve been trying to create a World Encyclopaedia for my fantasy world, and I’d like to start posting “pages” from this Encyclopaedia. I've already made some illustrations and written some. I’m still trying to figure out how I want to go about posting that, though! 😄

Checking in to say that I'm making a new cover for Brittle Teeth! Once that's done, I'll be sharing the link to the new and improved version of that creepy short story 😊

Sort of lamenting the fact that I don't seem to have saved the early version of Brittle Teeth 😬 I think I liked it better than the edit that I made later on. Will keep looking for it though. If I don't find it, I could always wrangle the current version into something I like more 😄

The next version will feature an illustrated cover (but go easy on me please because I'll be the first to admit my art needs improvement haha 😂). Excited to share it!
