hate to sound passionate about a fictional character but today i finished reading “the eye” (1930) which is a novella written by my good pal nabokov, the protagonist of the story is an unreliable narrator who survives his own suicide attempt but is convinced he’s actually dead and nothing is real anymore so he invents a new identity for himself and becomes obsessed with observing people in order to gleam his new personhood through their interpretations of his provoking actions. the last paragraph of the novel is him saying how extremely happy he is with this sort of semi-existence, he is free and he will never have to truly face life because he’s not a person anymore, all he is are just wildly different versions of some man as interpreted by many different people and like not to sound cringy but i think don draper doesn’t realize he’s real either. like, i think two people died in korea and only a construct survived.
