I’m not saying everyone should get off social media immediately, BUT HEY TRY NOT USING ANY SOCIAL MEDIA FOR A WEEK, NOT VIEWING ANYONE ELSE, YOUR LIFE LIFE WILL CHANGE. WHAT IS ACTUALLY SO REAL ABOUT POSED PICTURES, FORCED SMILES, GENETICALLY BLESSED AND PERFECT QUOTES? FOR THE MOST PART, IT’S VALIDATION OF SOCIAL EXPECTATIONS. Think about what your feeding yourself with each day when you just scroll and observe: Why do I follow this person? What are they selling me? What is their intention behind this photo? Was this video about real life change? Do I feel empowered? Do I feel small? Start questioning.

Social media isn’t real. It’s purely contrived mages and edited clips ranked against each other. It’s a system based on social approval, likes and dislikes, validation in views, success in followers… it’s perfectly orchestrated judgement. And it consumed me.

If Instagram didn’t have likes or followers, would we all still use it like we do today? If we can’t see who is the most liked how do we know who to follow? Who to copy? Who to aspire to? Who to try and be? Who to judge as higher, better, prettier, smarter, funnier? Who would be the judge of all that without a number that reflects mass approval? If it is not the masses deciding, only you can decide, the individual.We would be forced to think, act and learn for ourselves, regardless of what our peers do in comparison. No longer would we be a slave to social approval or expectations. We would have nothing else to do but find our unique edge. We would connect and seek (no longer follow) for purity. With no way to validate content, content creators would have no choice but to express out of passion and purpose, not out of the common aspiration for centre stage.

What dictates social media success? When you think about the most successful in terms of likes, views and followers across social media, who are these individuals and why do they have such a large following? The common theme is not truth, love or purity in what they share. It’s not their honesty, compassion or their undeniable hunger for revolutionary change. It’s their hunger for social validation. In prettier words, fame. And I craved it so bad. But when I finally got it? I realised it made me feel nothing but empty, lost and in constant comparison.

The number of online followers an individual attracts does not reflect their light(value), but the light in those seeking (what they value in themselves). The masses on social media follow accounts based on aesthetics, luxury and social status. They follow people with the qualities they wish they had themselves. People follow who they perceive as worthy of their time. But do they consciously choose who they follow? Or do they give in to desires and ideals sold to them on a screen? Their want to follow is based on conditioned beliefs that dictate aspiration. Being born into this screen dominated age, we are taught to mould ourselves in order to gain the most social validation. I’ve simply taken myself out of the sculpting studio. I don’t want to look to others for how I should live, speak, create. I want to sculpt myself, with no distractions. That’s why I am choosing to remove myself from other’s opinions of me, with over half a million people viewing, judging my every move, social media can never be light or casual for me. I want to focus my time on a project and movement (my site as the base) that I want to stay pure, collaborative, community based and of value. Not for social status, approval, likes, followers, money. I couldn’t be myself when those things dominated my content’s format.
