Dalat Specimen
Type specimen for Dalat, a typeface that draws on Vietnam’s visual history and attempts to form a synthesis of the stylistic features found in the country’s art and design through the years. As French Art Deco and Russian Constructivism have been prominent actors in Vietnamese visual culture, the basic outlines of the letters are constructed in a similarly geometric way. By contrast, the soft serifs are derived from Vietnamese calligraphy (Thu Phap) whose brush strokes tend to thicken and pool towards the end. Includes an essay: “Graphic design in Vietnam: Obstacles and Prospects.” Designed and published by Kasper Pyndt.
