When she was young, the diminutive Ann Pennington (1893-1971) - 4' 10" tall - started out as a dancer, appearing on Broadway. Her stature, plus her long red hair, made her stand out. She famously appeared in the following Ziegfeld revues:
Ziegfeld Follies of 1913 (Jun 16, 1913 - Sep 06, 1913)
Ziegfeld Follies of 1914 (Jun 01, 1914 - Sep 05, 1914)
Ziegfeld Follies of 1915 (Jun 21, 1915 - Sep 18, 1915)
Ziegfeld Follies of 1916 (Jun 12, 1916 - Sep 16, 1916)
Ziegfeld Follies of 1918 (Jun 18, 1918 - Closing date unknown)
Ziegfeld Follies of 1923 [Summer Edition] (Jun 25, 1923 - Sep 15, 1923)
Ziegfeld Follies of 1924 (Jun 24, 1924 - Mar 07, 1925)
Pennington's success came from her introduction of the "Black Bottom" dance, a shimmy-style dance first created by African-American dancers in New Orleans during the late-1800s. It became so popular, it overtook the Charleston. What wasn't commonly known at the time, was that the dance was first featured in the Harlem show "Dinah" in 1924, and was then appropriated by Pennington and her partner Tom Patricola in the musical comedy revue
'George White's Scandals of 1926' on Broadway.
Pennington appeared in a number of films, both silent and talkies. Her fame waned in the 1950s, and she lived out her days alone, destitute, in a NYC hotel room. She never married and had no children. Ann Pennington died of a stroke in 1971 at age 77. A few years before her death, she was asked what had been the greatest reward from her years of stardom, and her reply was: "' in living, honey".

Hey y’all! I’m created a fundraiser to help with expenses to move up north after being accepted into Institute for American Musical Theatre last year. I had to push it back due to timing and finances. Even if you can’t contribute right now, sharing and supporting would suffice and be just as helpful as well 🙌🏾
As someone who has allowed pursued her passions, I want to continue that journey with achieving a dream of mine and get closer to achieving one of my dream roles, hence why these pictures of me dressed as Anita from West Side Story (my favorite musical) because of women like Debbie Allen & Ariana DeBose who played it 💃🏽
Donate what you can, share and spread the word and just like sis sang “I like to be in America”, well: I’d like to be on Broadway ❤️🖤💛💜

Happy Birthday to the amazingly talented Spencer Liff! I thank the universe for this man every single day because he choreographed DWSA (especially Touch Me) so beautifully and perfectly (along with Alexandria Wailes who helped seamlessly and flawlessly incorporate sign language into the choreography) Not to mention he choreographed Falsettos too :)))))
