“Fear will be our enemy, and death its consequence.”
This line is said maybe two or three times throughout the Frozen stage musical, aka Frozen: The Broadway Musical. Pabbie says it the first time in the beginning after Elsa accidentally hits Anna in the head with her ice.
Their parents, and I’m thinking of Agnarr specifically, interpret this message as a warning not for Elsa, but for everyone else. Perhaps not Iduna as much seeing as her people worked with and were surrounded by magic and magical beings. But Agnarr absolutely hears this and thinks, “If the people learn of my daughter’s powers, they will grow to fear her and she will end up killing them all or herself. Or both.” He thinks that if she hides her powers then no one will be able to accuse her of anything and it will keep his daughter safe.
That is not what the message is saying, however. This is obviously meant to say that if Elsa learns to fear her powers, and herself, then she will not be able to control it and will end up killing everyone. If Agnarr and Iduna had taken the time to teach her to use her powers and grow the kingdom accustomed to their magical daughter, then none of Frozen would have happened. They could have lived a wonderful life.
Now, not to say Pabbie didn’t make the mistake of technically kinda telling them to hide her magic as well. He removed Annas memories of Elsas magic, thereby making it seem as if thats the path that should be taken when in reality it’s not. I don’t believe Pabbie understood the message either if I’m being honest. He seems to also think that hiding Elsas powers is the right way to go, somehow. I think if the writers wanted to make it more interesting, they could have done it in a way where Pabbie obviously meant for them to teach her, but the parents did not understand that or disagreed.
Sigh I just love Frozen: The Broadway Musical.
