The Brockway Record, Pennsylvania, February 3, 1933
A 39-year-old man was arrested after the incident while the boy suffered injuries serious enough that he had to be airlifted to a hospital out of state.
39-year-old “patriot” Curt Brockway was offended when the national anthem began playing and a 13-year-old boy failed to remove his baseball cap.
Brockway told the boy to take off the cap. The boy “cursed at him” instead. [Perhaps something like “Fuck off!” or “Mind your own fucking business!”] So Brockway, being a reasonable fellow, grabbed him by the neck and slammed him to the ground so hard he was “bleeding out of his ears.”
“His injuries were so serious that he had to be airlifted [from Montana] to Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital in Spokane, Washington.”
Brockway afterward insisted that “he was right to attack the boy ... He said the boy ‘was disrespecting the national anthem by wearing this hat.’”
Gosh, where could he possibly have gotten that idea?
