Mid-year list

2015 is already 50% up, and the releases so far have been just incredible. A large part of me is panicking that I only have 6 months left to listen to all the upcoming releases and catch up on the ones I’ve missed. Then again, my rational senses are reminding me that having too much good music to listen to is a great problem, and that this list is a good way of getting my thoughts down on paper (or rather, cyberspace). These are all vaguely ranked, but that shouldn’t be paid too much attention to.

My end-of-year list could be not very different, or drastically changed. These lists are fun, but they never reflect the true musical sense of the year accurately.

(To clarify, Strange Desires and Broken Thrills, while released in America last year, were only released recently in England where I live. So I’m fashioning the list by UK release date.)

Back in May, Cooking Vinyl Australia welcomed Philadelphia pop punk band Beach Slang to the label and convinced them to release a two-in-one down under.

Beach Slang, the Philadelphia based three piece, have announced their debut UK release and tour. Broken Thrills compiles onto a single LP their first two 7" singles; Cheap Thrills On A Dead End Street and Who Would Ever Want Something So Broken?.Released via Big Scary Monsters (La Dispute, Gnarwolves, Minus The Bear) on 27th April, Broken Thrills is part punk, part pop and all catharsis, referencing the ghost of The Replacements but keeping one foot firmly rooted in the present. Evoking the spirit of punk and juxtaposing it in to something that's as brutally honest as it is infectiously catchy, there's something indefinable about Beach Slang's music. Fresh off a full US tour with Cursive, the band make their first ever trip to Europe in May, including a handful of shows supporting Knapsack in Europe, before a short headline run in the UK.
