Fresh and Sad Blood: three days of snoring and shushing.
Last week I went on a small weekender with my band Fresh and our friends in Sad Blood. There were going to be 5 of us in total, because instead of going with our usual bassist and drummer, we’d decided to have George and Daniel from Sad Blood do double duty and play for us. This was mainly because it’s a lot cheaper to rent a 7 seater than a 9 seater “van”.
My friend Frankie and I were picked up from my house at around 3 on Friday. Frankie goes to Sussex university so we were giving her a lift down to Brighton. I hadn’t thought about how cramped the “van” was going to be though. Everyone decided that because I was the smallest I should have to sit in the shitty, tiny back seat with all the amps and sleeping bags. We’d all been looking forward to this trip for weeks and there was a holiday vibe, so I didn’t mind being wedged in the back. Plus, getting picked up at my house instead of having to haul my gear all the way to George’s place in Clapton (where the others had met up) was a pretty sweet deal.
The sun was setting and the sky was clear, and I couldn’t wait to get to the show and really start the weekend.
We arrived in Brighton within two hours. James thought that he was being clever by bringing one of those old-lady shopping wheelies to load in his stuff, but when we got everything out of the van and started to get everything into the venue, the wheel fell off and we all laughed at him, which was mean.
We loaded into The Cowley Club and met James from Sorta’ Lonely, who was putting on the show. He had veggie burgers ready for us, and we hung out for a little bit before helping get everything ready. On The Impossible Past by The Menzingers was playing over the PA, and I felt good. I then met Murphy, Jay and Connell, and found out that it was Murphy who was giving us a place to stay that night.
One by one, the other bands rocked up and soon it was time to play. I was glad that we were very early on in the bill, because I never drink until after we’re done and I was nervous. I was already a big fan of Honey Joy and Haters, and Edward James Almost had just set the bar pretty high. Though, as it turns out, we played fine and had loads of fun. The people watching were lovely, and heads nodded along. I was glad to have the pressure off so I could get drunk.
Sad Blood were supposed to play right after us, but Haters went instead. I’d already listened to them quite a lot, and so I really enjoyed singing along to Epiphanies. George and Daniel had been talking to me about Honey Joy for a while, and they were also really fucking good. I had had a few drinks so I wasn’t as uptight, and I felt like I could really enjoy myself. Sad Blood ended up playing last, and they killed it as always. I bought a Sorta Lonely t-shirt that had a really cool design, and chilled with Jo, Luke and Megan. If Jo wasn’t already great enough, she jokingly signed a Haters setlist for me, which I was really pleased with.
I felt like our first Fresh show out of London had gone really well, and we got back in the “van” for a short while to drive back to Murphy’s house. Daniel had refrained from drinking for the whole show, because out of the five of us only he knew how to drive, so he was glad to get to Murphy’s house and start partying. I drank some more and helped carry everything in. We were determined to leave nothing in the “van” overnight in case someone stole it.
Everyone hung out in the living room for a few hours, just chatting and having a good time. We listened to more of The Menzingers. At some point I went upstairs to use the loo, but then coming back down I misjudged the stairs and fell down them. It really hurt but I was too drunk to feel it at the time, and everyone thought it was hilarious.
A mattress was put down and Daniel got out the two air beds he brought with him. Then I sat on the mattress with Krys and Daniel in the room with everyone, got a little high and spiller beer on the aforementioned mattress. We decided to call it a night. I went to my bag to get my pjs, but realised that I had forgotten them. George said it was no problem, I could wear his and he’d sleep in his jeans. I slept in between Krys and George on the double mattress, and Daniel and James had an air bed each. I only got roughly two hours of sleep, because I was too excited about being away from home. It was very boring lying in between George and Krys and not being able to move in case I woke them up. My iPod was all the way on the other side of the room. James was snoring really loudly, Daniel was snoring moderately and Krys had really gross beer breath that he was blowing in my face every time he breathed out.
At about eight in the morning, an alarm from Daniel’s phone woke us up. We were planning to leave pretty early and get to Southampton way ahead of the show, but James offered to film us doing an acoustic session in the back garden, and we had plenty of time. Besides, James Connell and Murphy were so nice that we didn’t want to leave just yet. We took turns having a shower, James and Murphy cooked us all breakfast and we ate in the front room while watching YouTube videos. I’d never had vegan sausages before and they were so good that I quickly nabbed the two left over before anyone else could, much to George’s dismay.
I read for a little bit and then we loaded everything back in the “van” after we’d finished playing the acoustic songs. I didn’t want to leave what had been an amazing first show with great people. Just like yesterday, it was really sunny and bright outside, but freezing cold. We had some final hugs with Murphy, James and Connell and then drove off. Even though we’d only just met them properly last night, they’d become real friends.
Because Frankie wasn’t with us anymore, there wasn’t any need for me to have to sit in the Hell Seat in the back. I called the window seat in the middle row and made Krys sit in the awkward fake seat in between myself and George. James claimed that because he was the biggest, he needed the front seat for “leg room” but Daniel promised me that I’d get it at some point.
The drive out of Brighton was beautiful, because it’s a really hilly city and you can see for miles. I was in a great mood and so I risked being anti-social and put my headphones on. George had made a 6.5 hour playlist for the weekend and so I knew that I wasn’t getting the aux cord. Besides, I was in a Mountain Goats mood.
We got to Southampton with plenty of time to spare. Like with Brighton, we went straight to the venue (Planet Sounds) and unloaded. It wasn’t actually a venue at all, but a practice and recording space under a bridge. It was the coolest looking place.
Daniel, George and Krys had all lived in Southampton at some point before they’d moved to London, so we knew a lot more about what to do and where to go. Daniel, Krys and James got something to eat, but me and George missed out somehow. We met up with Dan from Creeper and Alex who takes photos, and went to a pub to while away some time before we needed to be back at the venue. I didn’t drink because Fresh hadn’t played yet, but everyone else did. Alex turned out to be really cool and big into books, so I talked to him about Nabokov what we were reading at the moment until it was time to troop back to Planet Sounds and set up.
Kate and Steph, who had put on the show, had arrived with food which I stupidly didn’t eat. We had a quick hug and a chat. In truth, getting everything ready didn’t take long at all, so I sat down on the very comfortable sofa to read, but got too tired and ended up having a nap. My coffee was in my hand when I fell asleep, but Daniel took it off me and put it on the table before I could spill it. I woke up a little while later to someone asking me something, and then decided to be social and meet everyone who had arrived while I was napping, including the guys from Holy Pinto and Faux. Paul and Kerry had turned up to watch Fresh, and it was great to see Paul after so long, and to meet Kerry too.
Soon I was watching Holy Pinto, who were real good, and when they played their last song I suddenly felt sick with nerves. I don’t know why - everyone so far had been really nice - but I didn’t feel better until we started playing the first song and everything felt fine again.
Our set was the funnest Fresh show I’d ever played. There was two guys standing in the front wearing Faux tshirts who really dug our cover of Still Shrill by Sorority Noise. As I played the intro to The Woods, there was a buzz of chatting and James jokingly shushed the audience, but it came across like he was being serious. Not wanting everyone to hate us, I laughed it off and poked fun at James, who took it fine. Everyone thought it was funny and clapped along to The Woods, which had never happened before. It was awesome.
It was the most people we’d ever played to, and they really seemed to like us. I talked about how nice these other southern cities were (which is true) and how much I hated London (also true). By the time we’d finished I was feeling really happy. I felt stupid getting nervous about playing in the first place. Paul and Kerry had somewhere else to go, but I hugged them goodbye and made plans to see them soon.
Now that I could get drunk, I was a lot more comfortable and keen to talk to people. Sad Blood were on next, and George nudged me on to sing harmonies with him in Spider Diagrams, which I nailed all for one bum note that I hope nobody noticed.
The lucky streak continued, and Sad Blood played better than I’d ever seen them play before, with everyone clapping along to Party Animal and laughing when George advertised his Tinder on the mic. When they’d finished, I could tell that they’d had as good a time as I’d had with Fresh. Daniel pulled me aside and told me that he and George we’re going to do a Human Pyramid during Faux’s set, and asked if I wanted to be on top. I said that was cool without really understanding what he meant.
I went outside to smoke and talk to everyone, and couldn’t believe how many people were nice to me. I chatted with some girls who were there to see Faux. I found George and hugged him extra hard because I was in that mood where everything and everyone is wonderful. Then I hugged James and Krys, even though both of them aren’t the huggy type.
By the time we went back to to see Faux, the not-so-secret headliners, I was pretty drunk and having fun. Then, a few songs in, Daniel and George got down on all fours, with Krys and some other people on top of them, and I was told to get on the very top. I found out that people do human pyramids at hardcore shows, and Daniel and George thought it would be funny to do one. I’d never heard of it before. Faux seemed to dig it. They played incredibly and I was blown away. I’d only listened to them for the week leading up to this show, but I knew that I was going to be listening to them a lot more. Their set went by really quickly and after we all went to the Co-op across the road for more beer before it closed.
Daniel had already drunk some because someone else had driven the “van” back to the house that we were to be sleeping in earlier, so we got a taxi. I’d left my guitar and pedals at Planet Sounds to save on space, and we’d pick them up tomorrow before driving to Exeter. I was pretty drunk at this point, and hadn’t minded when the guys loaded in my stuff for me, including my bag. I had to hold onto George to stop myself from falling over, and it was really cold. George lent me his coat and Daniel lent me his jumper.
We were spending then night with Dan from Faux. He was a good friend of Sad Blood and was really sweet to me about Fresh. When we got back to his house nearly everyone from the show was there, and it turned into a house party. There was a projector to get karaoke videos from YouTube up against the living room wall, and George played Hotline Bling way too many times. I tried to have a deep chat with Daniel while we smoked outside, but we couldn’t stop laughing because some drunk guy was getting really sick over the wall and the sound of vomit splashing was killing the emotional heart-to-heart. Krys peed up against a heating generator in the front garden and the drunk guy fell asleep on top of all our pillows and sleeping bags so we couldn’t get to them. We were all really tired and partied out so Dan from Faux said we could all sleep in his housemate’s room, as she was away.
Then we realised that somebody had put mine and George’s bags in the wrong car, and they’d gone somewhere else for the night. I couldn’t brush my teeth or get to any of my stuff and neither could George, so Daniel lent me his joggers and slept in his pants. George slept in his jeans. There was one double bed which I shared with Daniel and George while Krys and James took the air beds. This time, I got about four or five hours of sleep. Krys snored so loudly that he woke himself up and we all couldn’t stop laughing.
When we woke up George and I were starving hungry because we hadn’t had much to eat yesterday, and everyone else seemed up for breakfast. We walked into town and went to Stacks. I’d never been before but they did really good pancakes. I ordered too much food and couldn’t finish it. Everything was so cheap and I hated London even more.
Unlike the past two days, the weather was cloudy and grey. The trip to Exeter was the longest drive we’d had so far, but the scenery was beautiful so I didn’t mind. We pulled over by the side of a sheep field on the top of a very high hill to stretch our legs and have a smoke. We were so high up that you could see everything else for miles. Being Londoners were thought the sheep were pretty cool, but they were a bit wary of us and kept their distance.
By the time we got to the venue, I’d dozed off. I was excited to see The Cavern though, and once we unloaded and got everything inside, we met Ben from Shit Present (who we were to be staying with that night) and the guys from The Fairweather Band. We were a lot earlier than we expected to be so we hung out on the sofas and I went into the loo to change my clothes and put my contact lenses in. I hadn’t showered for two days, and I’d left my foundation at home so I was feeling and looking pretty grim, but I chalked it up to rock and roll. Besides, James hadn’t showered at all since we left London so I wasn’t the worst. I’d left my phone in the “van” so I borrowed Dan’s to call home and keep everyone in the loop. I talked to my sister about an All Time Low cover band she was starting at school with my other sister. They needed a name and I suggested All Time Woah. It had also snowed in London while I was away, but it hadn’t stuck.
Ben had made us some delicious pasta with vegan chilli sauce. Not being vegan, I covered mine with cheese and had seconds. All the food was laid out on the countertop of the bar, and the way we served ourselves and carried it back over to tables to eat reminded me of school lunch. I felt a lot better and calmer after eating, and hung around chatting as doors opened and people turned up. There were familiar faces: I was really happy to see Kay from Toothpaste and Andrew from Bangers, and Daniel and George got talking to him about a band he used to be in who they liked. I also met Jordon from Splitsville, who Fresh were going to be playing an acoustic show with later in the month.
For the other two shows, Sad Blood had played later than us on the bill, but for this date they were first on. I felt sorry for George because he seemed nervous and less chatty than usual, and remembering how I felt before playing last night in Southampton made it easy to empathise. They played as well as ever though, and I overheard people saying that they sounded sick.
Our set went well too. The sound guy was one of the nicest I had met, and the sound was probably the best we’d ever had it at. Even Daniel could hear the vocals and guitar from behind his drums. This was the smallest amount of people we’d played to so far, but you wouldn’t be able to tell because everyone there seemed really committed to the bands and enthusiastic. I was pleased to be finished and excited to see The Fairweather Band, who I’m quite big fans of. I chatted with Rory, Lande and Kay in between sets, and then got ready to watch them. They killed it, as I was expecting. We also heard quite a lot of new songs, which was cool too. One that stuck with me was about a cat called Domino, but at this point I was pretty drunk.
Instead of just drinking beers like the other nights, I’d had vodka and I felt more drunk than usual. I had to lean against George to keep upright but I felt pretty clear headed. After The Fairweather Band played we hung around at The Cavern for half an hour or so while Ben closed up. I chatted to a really nice girl called Calipso in bad French, and then in confused English. I was now more than just a bit drunk. To get back outside and into the “van” I had to climb up what seemed to be hundreds of stairs. I ended up in the front seat for the short drive back to Ben’s place. The car windshield in front of me wouldn’t stop spinning, and poor Daniel had to put my seatbelt on for me. Rock and Roll.
When we got to Ben’s I was still pretty drunk, but feeling fine. Giles from Great Cynics had come back with us too, and Ghost Hunters was on the TV. I remember feeling pretty disappointed that it was Ghost Hunters and not Ghost Adventurers (the American counterpart series) because Ghost Adventurers is much better. We all got a little high and I ate a whole packet of M&Ms. I took the piss out of James for show just because Ben thought it was really funny how mean I was to him. I’m pretty sure James knew it was all a joke, but then again it’s hard to tell with him.
Iona from Great Cynics also lived with Ben and Giles, but she was away in Australia. Me, George and Daniel all slept in her king sized bed, and it was by far the most comfortable place I had slept during the weekender. I wore Daniel’s jumper and joggers, and he slept in his jeans. I had probably gotten less than 6 hours of sleep in two days, but I didn’t doze off until 4:30am because i didn’t want tomorrow to come and for all of us to go home. Sappy, but true.
Daniel had set his alarm for 9, and since the “van” needed to get back to the rental place in Essex for 1pm, we didn’t have a lot of time. I took a much needed shower, and so did George and Daniel.
While we’d had loads of space upstairs in Iona’s room, James and Krys were supposed to share the pull-out double bed downstairs in Ben’s living room. This would have been fine, but on my way back from my shower I saw that James had sprawled out on the sofa bed, hogging it all to himself, while poor Krys had crammed himself into a tiny sofa for the night. We all thought that this was a typical “James” move and laughed about it. James said that he didn’t know that it was meant to be for both of them, and that if Krys had just asked he would have moved right over. But we all knew that Krys would rather die than ask James to move, which made it even funnier.
We loaded up the “van”, hugged Ben goodbye and drove off. We stopped for a McDonald’s breakfast at a service station because we didn’t have time to stay in Exeter. I was sad that we didn’t have more time to hang out with Ben, who was really great. As promised I got to sit in the front, and I played the entirety of Commit This To Memory, plus some beach slang which everyone seemed to enjoy.
Then, we all played each other the bands we’d been in before Sad Blood and Fresh. I played a band I’d played bass in when I was 16, and James played the band we’d been in together before Fresh - The Elizabeths. Another band James had played in was Civil Love, who were okay. Krys escaped judgement by saying that he didn’t have any of his old music on his iPod, and so Daniel played a hardcore band that he and George had been in together. They were called Piranha and I thought they were quite good; this is coming from someone who isn’t really into hardcore.
Then Daniel and I found out that we both loved Little Shop Of Horrors, so we played the soundtrack to that. As we got nearer and nearer to London (and my house) I felt worse and worse because I knew that I had work and school the next day, and I really didn’t want to be back. Daniel, George and Krys were only to be back in London for a day before they drove back up to Southampton to record their next EP, and I wished that I didn’t have to stay here too.
When Daniel pulled up outside my house no one was home, which I was really thankful for. I unloaded all my gear and hugged George, Daniel and Krys goodbye really hard. James didn’t get out of the car to say goodbye, and I wondered if it was because he was mad at me for teasing him the whole weekend. I think it’s more likely that he was sick of not sleeping and showering for 3 days, and I was going to see him in a few days for the next Fresh show. I waved goodbye as they drove off and went upstairs to my room to dump my stuff and go to bed.
