Rick, for once, was allowing someone else to drive. He often felt uncomfortable when he didn’t have control of the wheel. He knowing what to do with himself, with his thoughts, if he didn’t have the focus of the road in front of him.
However, he was currently so exhausted he didn’t trust his eyes to stay open long enough to get them home. So when Aaron had ordered him and Daryl into the back seat with the quiet command of, “Rest.” he didn’t bother to argue.
His head leaned heavily against the window, but his eyes were open, watching trees passing by. Thoughts of how much they had managed to scrounge up and if it would be enough to feed both Negan’s people and theirs were keeping him from sleeping.
In the midst of mentally battering himself over how he could do better, something thudded against his shoulder. He almost jerked away until he turned, his eyes meeting the top of Daryl’s head. For a moment he could do nothing but stare, completely taken aback. It wasn’t often that the archer let himself unwind, he was like Rick in that way, always thinking of what they would do next and how he would be of assistance. More so, Daryl wasn’t one for physical contact. In fact, he and Daryl had known each other for almost 8 years and he could count on one hand the amount of times they’d touched.
Rick felt a smile pull at his lips as he watched the other’s relaxed face, sighing softly. Effectively distracted from worrying over their current situation, he realized just how exhausted he was. Leaning his head back against the seat he closed his eyes and allowed himself to find momentary comfort in the warmth against his side.
