Exceptional X-Men

After the fall of Krakoa, Kitty is, as the kids say, Not Doing Great™. But trying to put all that behind you is harder when it's part of who you are, and when Kitty encounters three recently-awakened mutants, she'll be reminded that she is a teacher. And also Emma Frost is there.

One thing I appreciate about some superhero series: they're not afraid to introduce characters with similar powers, and differentiate them by personality. Thao Tran/Melee has intangibility powers like Kitty, but she's more hotheaded, unwilling to back down where Kitty has some experience with deescalating. Having said that, I don't think the three characters introduced here were anything really phenomenal, merely good.

"Merely good" actually covers the book as a whole. It's mostly focused on Shadowcat and her trauma from the war against the Sentinels and the loss of Krakoa, recovering over time by helping people more helpless than her. Everyone else gets a little focus, but not enough to make them one of the greats. At the very least, the limited cast allows for the group dynamic to flourish, which is one of the book's great strengths.

I think many people could enjoy this. I am just not certain if someone will love this book. If you think you might be interested, give it a read; but if you think you won't be, just keep on lookin'.

Trista Marshall is a young Black heroine, the bubbly, bright-eyed Bronze; gifted w/ the mutant power to change into a form of a robust unknown metal (+ release prehensile whip-like tendrils, in this form), her soft, friendly & upbeat nature actually makes the young anime fan averse to conflict & confrontation; though, she's lately learned to hone her powers in defense of herself & mutantkind, courtesy of mentors Kitty Pryde & Emma Frost, as part of a new trainee class of X-Men!
