The exhale was gentle, soft. Almost as if he couldn't believe was he was hearing. The distance between them on the couch was intentional, it felt forbidden for someone like himself to get too close.        unlike her 𝒕𝒚𝒑𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 new year’s celebrations , this one is smaller - much more intimate . only close friends , their partners , her cat pumpkin ( of course ) , & well - her plus one , who also happens to be 𝐂𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐍 𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐀 . things had been going slow & steady for them lately , something she couldn’t say for any other aspect of her life . time spent with steve felt like a whole other reality from the one she’s actually living , one so simple & 𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒕 , it’s difficult to return from . at least in this moment things seem perfect . champagne set aside , the countdown nearing its end , the clock ticking toward a new beginning - freckled arms pull him close , lips gentle & 𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐋  against his as midnight strikes . in a dreamy haze that perfect moment passes - cheeks pink , her crystal gaze glittering with possibility . ❝ happy new year . ❞

       it’s almost 𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 how obviously her breath hitches at his touch , cutting herself off mid-sentence . for so long she had denied herself this , playfulness through such endearingly affectionate touch . the baker was usually long gone before reaching this milestone , or anything beyond casual encounters - really . 𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄 , the only area in her life where caution has not yet been kicked to the curb & here she is . . . searching his azure gaze for a reason to 𝒓𝒖𝒏 , & for the 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 time in her life , not being able to find a single one . 

       she had been talking about something that seemed so important a few seconds ago , but now it’s as if every thought in her mind has been wiped clean by the 𝒔𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒕 brush of his fingers against her knee .  ❝ i - uh . . . ❞ cheeks burn crimson , face bowing to press against his shoulder , giddy smile evident in the way her words seem to 𝐒𝐎𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐍 around the edges , ❝ what was i saying ? ❞

       she’s 𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒅 this moment for a while now , secretly hoping they might bypass questioning the reality of their feelings entirely . a part of her wishes she could simply tuck them neatly away into her back pocket when he isn’t there , the rest 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐍𝐒 for a life less complicated than the one she’s been dealt . keeping distance is not easy for someone like her , ( heart embroidered on her sleeve & head stuck in the clouds ) but it’s become a 𝒏𝒆𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒚 . hope has secrets . dangerous ones . parts of herself she’d rather leave in the darkened alleys they belong to . the hope he’s gotten to know is real , but incomplete - 𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐋𝐎𝐖 . a candy coating masking a bittersweet center . . . 

       if she were looking up into anyone else’s eyes , lying would be so 𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒚 . it would be high time she cut her losses before any 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋 harm is done . but the eyes are his , & her heart is in a 𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒆 - because for the first time in a long time she can’t deny that he’s well worth the risk .
