Brookvale Park by Tristan & Juliana
Brookvale Park, Singapore
The inspirational interior design ideas used in thisapartmentwere stimulated when the architects were searching for a home of their own. This scenario adds an extra personal dimension to the styling decisions made on the interior. You could say this modern apartment renovation was truly a labour of love. Evidence of this can be seen in the delightful way this old property has been rescued and nurtured back to life.
Structurally sound but needing a total ‘revamp’ the old apartment was first gutted. Underneath the original ceiling were revealed fabulous timber joists, although these had darkened through the action of time, they were in excellent condition. The decision was to leave these exposed as a majormodern interior designfeature. The newly exposed beams were lightened and gave the apartment a definitive structure with a lofty focus from which to develop.
The open linear quality of the beams were naturally echoed in the floor to ceiling shelving units, the window frames and the edges of other major designfeatures. This, relationship provided a fascinating airy network of lines which add cohesion to the apartment’s whole interior design plan. Solid cool stones were used on the floor and steps to continue the emphasis on natural materials. These add a sense of solidity, age and permanence to the apartment’s interior design.
The delight the designers find in using natural materials alongside hi tech fittings andfurnishingsis evident. Beautifully hand crafted wooden items are featured in the bathroom, the dining area , the living room, pretty much everywhere in fact. For example a simple wood and cane stool is casually placed next to a fabulous minimalist stone bath tub. This type of juxtaposition is seen everywhere in the apartment interior adding warmth to the clinical geometry of the design scheme. The simplicity of theapartment’s interior designis clearly influenced by eastern cultures but also something more, something uniquely precious…….the personal experiences and memories of the architects themselves.
