I do think that the cultural stigma against necrophilia often declaws depictions of grief in fiction. People clutch their pearls over a corpse being given a chaste kiss but I'm not even joking when I say that a character in grief should be able to dig up their loves body and french it w out that being considered a risky creative decision. Like. Grief necrophilia makes sense coming from a place of romantic love. It's Denial, it's a routine that a grieving person won't let end. Behavioral changes and extreme or irrational behavior are also just straight up symptoms of grief. Most people believe that sex can be a display of love, to the extent that in fiction sex is commonly used as a quick way to communicate a romantic connection to the audience. But abberant or stigmatized acts of sex are no longer considered an acceptable shorthand for affection. When Philia literally means love. Necrophilia is love of the dead.

And I think that this also effects depictions of non romantic grief that involve non necrophilic acts because overly familiar or possessive or affectionate behavior towards a corpse is Off in a way that many people can only understand as sexual. And when it's familial grief theres sort of a double whammy of Subtextual Incest and necrophilia, making it even easier to shy away from. But I don't think theres an incestuous undertone to a character keeping their moms mummified body thats literally their mother. When you let your family members presence leave your home its like admitting that a fundamental relationship in your life is gone. Once again, denial, behavioral changes and irrationality.

Idk I think letting yourself give in to grief totally and completely is something a lot of people want to explore in fiction and I don't think it should be something to avoid. Of course you want to imagine a world where you don't have to be strong, you don't have to keep up appearances and you can physically manifest all of the emotions you're feeling. Of course you want a world where you never have to move forward, where you don't have to take the healthy route, where you never need to learn to live without them.

Our currently accepted post mortem rituals are really, really already, and yet non traditional displays of grief are scandalizing. The corpse is the only thing you have left of the person you loved of COURSE you're gonna get weird about it
