Katniss works at Cornucopia Coffee, a massive chain coffee joint, selling over priced caffeinated concoctions to trendy Capitalites- it’s her third and least favorite job.

Having rejected her manager’s advances, Seneca is now out to find any cause to fire her, making her already miserable job that much worse.

Her phone is buzzing like crazy in her pocket, she peeks and it’s Prim ‘SOS!’, she needs to read those messages to make sure her sister is okay, but can’t risk Seneca catching her on her phone. He finally heads to the back and she checks to discover her sister’s frenzied messages are over a not-quiet-dead bird that Buttercup delivered to their doorstep. 🙄

Seneca returns and she panics, shoving the phone in her pocket and pouring a cup from the closest pot to hand to the waiting customer: it’s the dregs of a past due pot.

Seneca snatches the cup from her to deliver personally. Her heart sinks as she realizes the drink is going to the man who just ordered London Fog with sugar free lavender syrup - she’ll never forget that order again.

The man accepts the cup, takes a sip and winces. Seneca asks if everything is to his liking and Katniss braces herself to be berated and fired, but instead, the stranger smiles, his kind blue eyes flitting to Katniss’s panic stricken one’s, praising the drink and even leaving a tip.

As the broad shouldered man with the ashy blond hair leaves, she hopes he’ll return someday so she can thank him.

Do you think that Finnick was reaped or volunteered for the games?

Hey @browneyeddevil thanks for the ask and I’m so sorry it took me this long to answer. I haven’t had a lot of extra brain power to go around lately, lol.

I honestly go back and forth on this one and my answer will depend on what day of the week it is, lol. On the one hand, Katniss tells us in the first book that District 4’s tributes are usually older and part of the Career pack, but we also know from Catching Fire that Finnick won his games at the age of fourteen, youngest Victor ever. Something else she tells us in the first book is that in some districts, specifically the career districts, where it’s considered an honor to volunteer, they often have multiple volunteers so deciding their tributes takes awhile. It’s hard to imagine a fourteen year old volunteering from D4 and no one else who was older from the pool of volunteers being sent instead.

It’s possible that Finnick was actually the beginning of D4 being included in the Career pack and being considered serious contenders for the games. Personally, I find that questionable since their industry would suggest a certain level of skills that would be useful in the games being developed at a young age - climbing, survival in long exposure to the elements, nets and traps to catch prey (human or otherwise), fishing, using knives, etc.

I tend to swing between thinking his family was causing the Capitol problems so they ensured he made it into the arena (reaped) or the possibility that his family was in some kind of financial trouble so he volunteered and the chips just somehow fell that he went instead of an 18 year old volunteer, and thinking he was reaped and was really the start of D4’s involvement in the Career pack. He did win the 65th games, which Katniss would’ve been five, so she wouldn’t have been old enough to really start making critical analyses of patterns in the games, such as who makes up the career packs and which districts most of the tributes hail from, before that.

So yeah, I can see possibilities for both given what we do know for sure about Finnick.

I think Finnick was probably reaped. However, in my head, he is someone who was a big brother to kids in District 4 so he went willingly than have some child who had no fighting chance.

Also, I'm sure whoever the other tribute was, Finnick protected them till the end.

I don't remember if this is canon, but I've always thought he was reaped. He didn't have a younger brother, or anyone else he could volunteer for. Besides, if I remember it correctly, he was just 14 years old when he went into the Games. He was so young, and in District 4, there weren't careers. So he literally had no reason to volunteer.

were you under 18 when you first encountered thg series (books or movies)?

Yes!

Also I'm going to break the rules of the game and elaborate.

I was 12. My older brother had downloaded a copy onto our home computer. The day I started reading it I was so hooked that I snuck downstairs in the middle of the night to finish it.

It was the first time I had done something like that. I think the speed I read it at made me not actually understand or pick up on a lot of the nuances in the story.

I read Mockingjay when I was 13. I remember reading it and sobbing and not understanding what was happening.

I didn't want Katniss to end up with Peeta I wanted her to end up with Gale. To me she had said she didn't want that enough that it had stuck out to me. And it felt like she was doing him a favour or something, and losing her autonomy after everything. And I just wanted her to have what she wanted.

Back then I thought love could only be familiarity, shared history, shared background, obligation, commitment. I thought Peeta didn't have these things but Gale did, and was confused about the ending.

I also lacked reading comprehension enough to think she actually voted for the games to continue. A lot of people around me think that's what happened and I've been explaining the ending to more and more people irl haha

I want to tell you how much I love Growing Pains! I remember starting it back when it was on anon as part of the TWHHA collection and went by a different name. It’s written so beautifully and with such care.

You can tell from your writing that you’ve thought a lot about District 12. You’re work paints such a clear picture of the district beyond canon.

I love your exploration of the Everdeens and their dynamics. The conversation between Katniss and her mother in the most recent chapter was raw and realistic; You somehow captured the trepidation on both sides so clearly. Katniss and Prim’s conversation that followed was just the right counterbalance.
