America, built on the foundation of Racism, Hatred and Lies
White supremacy hurts lady liberty
skin the colour of bruises
from the second it was worn
it will never heal
but reveal
when in history it was torn
but they don’t see it as a medal
they see it as a threat
because of wars 1000 miles away
we are now in debt
they have permission
with our blood that flows
to shape it like play-dough
they carve the slurs in
because they know
salt on scarred skin
will refuse to let go
“your scars don’t define your story!”
but don’t you get it? don’t u see?
in every media outlet we read
‘the scarred’ scream in agony
our people are never free
“a terrorist or in poverty?”
my acting agent asks me
our judge screams “guilty!”
so i’m sorry when I don’t believe
my skin is ‘a thing of beauty’
when in magazines, there is no me
in galleries, there is no me
in victory, there is no me
and as a teen
the lesson they feed
is that our people plead
our history bleeds.
‘the scarred’ will always grieve
our homes their empire thieved
compensation is what we need
and blankets for our slaved knees
from the homes they burnt, come refugees
“go back to your own country” they scream
racism is fuelled with hypocrisy
so ‘the scarred’ will never be allowed to breathe
because wherever we are, we’re told to leave
we are homeless for eternity.
we are homeless for eternity.

Since the 2020 Civil Rights movement has launched and #blacklivesmatter has started trending at large - I have seen suspiciously fewer posts about how the black/brown pride flags are "ugly". And I hope this is because the oodles of vastly white people who were nitpicking their aesthetics as a lead up to calling them "unnecessary" or "unfitting" for the pride flag have since learned and grown out of it. And not because they simply don't want to get caught expressing those views at a time when outrage against racial injustice and disparity is at its highest.
But then I still managed to find people - today - who think critiquing the flag's aesthetics is more important than its message because anti-racism isn't "part of the lgbt+ community" anyway.
And let me blunt - that hurts. It hurts. It hurts.
There is no part of a flag that is more important than its symbolism. Its why we burn the U.S. flag to protest infringments of human freedom; its why any flag with the black and brown stripe or power fist is necessary to openly combat racism by specifically making an anti-racist statement.
And people are dying. Not only was the U.S. Pride movement founded on the pain of trans women of color, but worldwide that pain is still alive as the lgbt+ community continues to struggle with racism and trans women of color are one of the most targeted groups for harassment and violence. We cannot afford to look at this issue as anything less than intersectional and systemic.
I'm not saying you can't find the aethestics unappealing - I'm saying there is more at stake in the flying of these flags than your negative opinion. Keep it to yourself. A good deal of people have needed this. And with everything they have to go through - everything they have had their friends and family go through - and everything going on today - it would be nice if they could find ONE symbol of hope that was tainted by useless discourse and negativity. What does it even matter that its including racial acceptance????... The "original" pride flag included "life, healing, sunlight, nature, harmony, spirit"!...What do any of those have to do with being lgbt+ let alone with people?
You can fly your new 6 striped "pride flag" and no one in our community is going to stop you so please don't diminish the importance of these flags or their use. Basically I'm trying to say in the kindest way I can that I don't think its fair to qpoc to tell us what you think about the "aesthetics" or "necessity" of this flag. And if I sound angry doing it its because I am. Its impossible not to feel hurt by a long series of comments doing nothing but weighing their white opinion on something that is expressly about poc. But I don't WANT to feel angry. This world keeps delivering so much pain I just want everyone to understand that the last thing I or anyone wants is to have the focus of our struggles shift to its white appeal. We want something happy and hopeful. Something that promises our societies will do better.
Please let us just have it.
Covid-19 is disproportionately killing Black communities! Here is some of the data.
