I just uploaded a new “Coffee Talk w/ Char” and this video has been on my mind for a while. I hear so many black/brown people say “eating healthy is expensive” or that I am on that “white people stuff” now that I am vegan and it’s saddens me. It truly hurt to know that my people believe that you have to be rich and white to be vegan and that being vegan is a white people thing. So many of my family and old friends crack jokes 24/7 about me being vegan. While I try not to take the jokes personal, I can’t help but to sit back and reflect on the “jokes” being made. Why is it funny for a young black/brown woman (person) like myself to want to be healthy and change my lifestyle for the better when my people continuously die due to health issues (diabetes, cancer, CHF, Hypertension, etc.) that can be reversed and prevented by changing your diet/lifestyle?! I have lost too many family members due to health related issues and I want to change the horrendous cycle. I’m truly being the change I want to see.
