This is from The Qualms by Bruce Norris. (h/t to Diana Burbano for sharing on facebook.)
See, THIS is how toxic masculinity a) works its way into a “liberal” medium like theater and b) can get someone seriously hurt.
“Don’t be a pussy! Slap him for real!” And that male actor is supposed to just take it, fight choreo be damned, because it’s a woman slapping him, and theater is supposed to be real, just take it, man up.
Implying that safety is somehow wimpy, or feminine, or not real acting is legitimately dangerous in this context.
Besides this gem of a stage direction, this scene (and really, the whole play in my opinion) puts forward some really damaging messages with male and female sexuality. In this particular scene, Regine is coming on to Chris and he’s incredibly uncomfortable with it, as this is him and his wife’s first time at this swinger’s party. Regine keeps pushing it, Chris keeps backing off, until Regine is REPEATEDLY slapping Chris after he explicitly asks her to stop.
It’s played for laughs. Because how hilarious this uptight guy is being slapped by a woman! Don’t be a pussy! Slap him for real!
Imagine if the genders were reversed in this scene.
The rest of the play includes a man being trickled into discussing sexual experiences with a man and then made fun of for them, the not-at-all-dated double standard of two men = gross but two women = hot, and the hilarious running joke of an overweight woman with a young hot man that adores her. (To add insult to injury, that woman was played by the delightful Donna Lynne Champlin when I saw it. Of COURSE the guy fell in love with her!)
Basically, this is garbage, and fight choreography being treated as shameful or less than “real” acting makes me so angry.

Okay which one is Bruce?
