“LOVERS IN A DANGEROUS TIME”

TRUE NORTH (1984)

“LOVERS IN A DANGEROUS TIME” is a long forgotten guitar pop gem by Canadian artist BRUCE COCKBURN. Originally released as a 7″ Single from the 1984 LP ‘Stealing Fire.’

At times reminiscent of a cleaner sounding Replacements or one of Billy Bragg’s love songs only glossier. The (somewhat) dated production sounds remarkably fresh today which really helps the track stand on its own as a great guitar pop relic from the genres most fruitful time.

Opinions vary on the origins of the content, with some speculating that it had to do with the encroaching HIV/AIDS epidemic, while others believed it be influenced by the recent Guatemalan refugee crisis, in which Cockburn himself witnessed on a trip to Central America prior to the writing and recording of ‘Stealing Fire.’ Cockburn has kept mum for the most part, claiming the song was inspired by simple schoolyard love, but has encouraged all kinds of interpretations of the song’s meaning. Personally, I just think it’s a great guitar pop song with a timeless feel both lyrically and musically. Take for example this here lyrical snippet:  

“But nothing worth having comes without some sort of fight / Got to kick at the darkness / Till it bleeds daylight"

The final couple of NFL games before the Super Bowl is today. But it's time for a #VinylAndBeerSunday. I have tickets to see BRUCE COCKBURN tomorrow night in Salem, OR. So I decided to spin his 1977 live release, CIRCLES IN THE STREAM. In my opinion, he has been called Canada's BOB DYLAN, but BRUCE COCKBURN has released some of the finest material that equals DYLAN. This album features the best of his early period, such as LORD OF THE STARFIELDS, STARWHEEL, and ALL THE DIAMONDS IN THE WORLD. It has been one of my favorite live albums of all time as well. I have accompanied this classic set with a massive, hoppy brew from BLOCK 15 BREWING. Their STICKY HANDS is a massive hops explosion in every mouthful. It goes well with the music and tonight's homemade beef pepperoni pizza. So...what are you listening to? It's the Memorial Day version of #VinylAndBeerSunday. After traveling from Washington State, I wanted to wind down, and I couldn't wait to play my new acquisition. The 1977 Live release from BRUCE COCKBURN. As a massive fan of his music, CIRCLES IN THE STREAM is one of my favorite live albums. It's easily in my top five. I was so glad to see this in the bins at a used record store during a recent trip to Idaho. My brew tonight is an excellent Double IPA from OSKAR BLUES BREWERY. Their DOUBLE DALE is a solid hoppy beer with lots of pine upfront. It's the perfect brew to enjoy these excellent guitar-based tunes. So...what are you listening to?
