Catching up here and noting some very good beers from Oregon and Washington we tried recently courtesy of our Portland bureau*: Double Mountain’s 12th Anniversary Barrel-Aged Flanders Ale (Hood River, OR), Block 15 Animal Cookies IPA (Corvallis, OR) and Grains of Wrath collaboration with Trap Door Brewing The Hindenburg IPA (Camas / Vancouver WA). The Flanders was a perfect tartness and the IPAs our favourite kind with a focus on the hops, not the haze.  The Hindenburg’s newspaper style label was a collaboration with ZZEPPELIN, and who does not love that hop version of a Barnum’s animal crackers box!

I’ve been drinking IPA after IPA these last couple weeks, and unlike many, I’ve enjoyed them all. Are many the “same” as some would suggest? Well, mix up their bag of tricks - citrus, tropical fruits, fruits, pine, resin, green dankness, haziness, bitterness, hop varieties, etc - and they’re all the same and yet they’re all still quite different. Can this also be said for Stouts? Today I kept the IPA-in-a-can streak going with this delicious fresh citrus tropical fruity hop danky Sticky Hands by Block 15 Brewing Company (Corvallis, OR), and then I switched to the dark side with a dark silky bitter Dark Star, an Oatmeal Imperial Stout from Fremont Brewing (Seattle, WA); (can’t wait to try my first BA Fremont Stout sometime these next couple days...).
