Artist’s Statement

www.facebook.com/brucereed99 One’s work is a central component of a person’s sense of self-worth and of their trajectory into the future. There are a few general principles that guide both my artwork and my work in the mental health field. First, never force the brush to create what you expect, instead, let images emerge on their own and then follow them for what they might become. It is when we release our need for control that some of the most beautiful images are fostered. Work allows me to help others by listening empathically to my client’s tales of secrets and traumas, but it also vicariously exposes me to the plight and woes of the individual. Painting offers a passage to explore the burden that I sometimes bare as the keeper of their secrets. It is no coincidence that my art has been referenced as mysterious and atmospheric. Second, there are no mistakes as the paint is applied; rather, multiple layers develop strength and are built upon time and time again. No single action can or should determine one’s relative success or failure, just as it should not determine the outcome of a particular piece of artwork. It is even advantageous to start over completely. On occasion, turning the canvas upside-down transforms the sky into a new foreground. Oil painting is especially suited for changing perspectives through erasing, covering, and layering. Scumbling over scars from previous paintings adds character to the final image. Finally, painting is fun. Drink some coffee, put on some music, stay up too late, and invite others to paint with you. Be impulsive, make a mess, and break the rules. Laugh. Enjoy the art of making art. Explore and experiment until you find a path worth following. Having genuine unregulated fun offers great opportunity to move forward.
