This is not a request, Reed. Go home.
(FF Volume 1 #9)
Thank you, Peter.
(Fantastic Four Volume 3 #600)
I always knew Doom just wanted to sloppily make out with Reed Richards
Runaways (2017) #9
Love Theorem
I haven't been seeing enough Reed Richards x Reader content lately, so here is some for you—and also a birthday gift from me to me.
People often asked Y/N if she ever felt intimidated by her partner, the elastic Reed Richards, member of the Fantastic Four. After all, being with a superhero when you were just an ordinary person gave you plenty of reasons to feel a mix of nerves and fulfillment.
While the situation could certainly be heavy at times, especially when he left on missions to save the world and she feared he might not come back, Y/N harbored a more secret worry, one she had never even voiced to her lover.
Long before he went into space and gained his powers, he possessed something else quite remarkable: a brilliant mind. He was a genius.
Y/N wasn't stupid, no one had ever suggested such a thing, but she often found herself in the middle of conversations filled with numbers and terms she didn't understand, suddenly feeling very small.
"Sorry, darling, this conversation must be terribly boring for you." Reed had said once, noticing her looking zoned out across the table. He hadn't meant it unkindly, he hadn't even realized she was lost, he simply assumed she wasn't interested.
To him, it didn't matter that his partner didn't share his intellect. He had never mentioned it because it was simply a given.
But Y/N felt humiliated every time. Ashamed.
She had truly tried. She had opened books, focused hard during their exchanges in that strange jargon, and even attended some of Professor Richards' lectures, using the excuse that she missed him.
After several months, the only things she had to show for it were a splitting headache and the certainty that quantum physics, mechanics, aerospace engineering, and all those subjects that seemed so fascinating, went completely over her head.
You only had to see her lover’s face light up when he spoke about them. He even had jokes that completely eluded her, leaving her to wear a forced smile just to avoid looking stupid.
It wasn't a daily issue. Given a little more time, she might have stopped dwelling on it and focused on everything else, the positives. After all, she was very happy with Reed.
That was until Ramona arrived. Fresh out of the country’s top school, young, beautiful, and clever, she seemed to grasp absolutely everything "the great Professor Richards" said, beaming at him and holding his hand a moment too long during greetings.
Between his superhero duties, Reed struggled to keep up with his research, he lacked the necessary time, energy, and focus. He didn't put it in those exact words, but he was also making time for Y/N, who felt guilty for pulling him away from his first love: Science.
He had sought an assistant to strike a better balance, and that was how Ramona entered the picture. Progressive and open-minded, Reed made no distinction between men and women, valuing only ability.
With that in mind, Y/N knew she had nothing to worry about, even if the young woman decided to make a move.
Either her lover wouldn't even notice, he was often completely oblivious to people flirting with him, even her, or he would be shocked by such an indecent proposal, given his loyal and upright nature.
But even though the assistant meant no harm, she felt threatened. After all, she still didn't grasp the calculations and high-minded concepts that mattered so much to him.
She felt stupid because of it, and even stupider for feeling that way, since the issue didn't seem to have even crossed the brilliant mind of her partner, who had loved her just as she was from the very beginning.
It wasn't hard to hide her unease, given his frequent absences and social awkwardness, yet, there came a moment when Reed stared at her strangely, forgetting the book he’d been reading, as if he had stumbled upon an unsolvable math problem.
"Honey, is everything okay ?"
"Yes, why ?" Y/N asked, keeping her eyes on the television.
"I don't know, you look… tense. Do you want a massage ? A drink ? I could ask Herbie, he's the best bartender-masseur around. Unless my settings are off. I could give it a try, but I can't guarantee the results."
"That's sweet, but I'm fine."
"… Okay."
Clearly, things weren't 'okay' at all for Mister Fantastic, he kept watching her for the rest of the evening, the same way he’d stare at the board covered in his incomprehensible calculations.
Convinced there was a problem in their relationship, he made the worst possible decision: spending even more time with her. This meant further neglecting his research, work that was being carried on by dear Ramona, who called every day to keep him updated on their progress.
It was awful for Y/N to see his expression shift from delight to sudden sadness upon hearing about a major breakthrough, realizing he’d missed witnessing it firsthand because he was stuck there with her.
"You know, you can go to your lab. You have a lot of work, I completely understand."
"You're sweet, but I've missed so many important dates and neglected you far too much. I won't have you thinking for a second that you aren't the most important thing in my life."
"Oh, Reed… I don't doubt that at all. It's just…"
"Just ?"
"Nothing. Don't worry about it."
"My love." he sighed, taking her hand. "Talk to me. I need to understand, I need to see that radiant smile of yours again. You haven't smiled like that lately."
"You're going to think it's ridiculous."
"Never, if it's hurting you. We're a team, darling. And I might be the so-called smartest man alive, but I need your help."
"… I’m not smart." Y/N muttered, avoiding his gaze, even though she knew he’d look at her with those sad puppy-dog eyes.
"Sorry ? Could you say that again ?"
"I’m not smart ! Not like Ramona, or Sue, or a science student. I don’t understand anything when you explain your research to me, and… I feel bad, I want to understand, I really tried, but it’s just too complicated. There, happy ?"
"… I’m an idiot."
"Reed !"
"I’d be the biggest fool alive if I doubted my love for you just because of some slight intellectual gap between us."
"That’s not what I’m saying. I know you don't care about that, but… The problem is me, I just don't feel like I measure up."
"Hmm. Funny. I often think you’ll get fed up with me because I’m weird, boring, and a mutant." he murmured, avoiding her gaze in turn.
While perhaps not as brilliant as he was, Y/N had imagined many possible scenarios for this conversation, even the worst ones, but at no point had she considered Reed’s own doubts and insecurities.
He always seemed so sure of himself, even in situations beyond his control, always finding a solution thanks to his genius mind and flexible body.
But he was still a man.
And deep down, there was a little boy who had lost his parents at a young age, who had been rejected for being different, and who was now constantly in the spotlight, expected to excel at everything so as not to let anyone down.
He had been terrified out in space, certain it was the end. Certain he would never see the woman he loved, the woman he had promised to return to quickly. Then he had come back, changed. Even stranger than before.
To him, it was a miracle that they were still together, given all his peculiarities. By his calculations, anyone else would have run off long ago. But not Y/N.
He had made her laugh the first time they met with a stupid joke, one neither of them had actually understood, and that remained one of the most beautiful memories he cherished in his eidetic mind.
Even knowing she didn't understand the technical details, she would stay with him while he thought things through, allowing him to focus, relax, and think out loud without looking like a madman, until his brain finally grasped where the problem lay. Like a rubber duck. The only one that worked for him.
They complemented each other perfectly, provided one overlooked their respective insecurities.
"I don't find you boring at all. It’s actually sexy when you’re solving equations."
"Oh, really, darling ? Do we have a crush on the professor ? Usually, people get more excited about my flexibility. I get a lot of questions from reporters about that."
"I know."
"That I look hot when I stretch, or that some people are nosy perverts ?"
"Good question. I’m suddenly having doubts about the first point. We’d need an experiment to verify that claim."
"Oh, my love, just one ? That wouldn't yield conclusive results, we’d need multiple experiments to get a proper sample size."
"If Professor Richards says so." she purred, feeling his arms wrap around her. "I’m looking forward to a convincing demonstration."
Whenever Y/N was asked if it was intimidating to be with Mr. Fantastic, she would honestly answer yes, partly because he was brilliant and often away risking his life, but she was more at ease than before.
There was no need to bring up Ramona again, despite her exceptional skills, she seemed far more focused on Johnny whenever he visited the lab than on her mentor, who was, after all, nothing more than a role model.
A slightly boring role model, she had once gently confided to his partner.
"He talks about nothing but science. Which is normal, that’s what we’re here for, but still, he never stops ! Except sometimes to talk about you. It’s cute."
Cute. That was the right word. Y/N had really no reason to be intimidated by Reed Richards, the cutest man in the world.
Sorry to bother both is it true that in one universe Reed and Johnny end togueter? I have read ultimate and Sue and Ben get toguether but i dont know if the reed(/johnny is canon
There is one (very strongly implied, confirmed by author) canon Reed/Johnny universe, but be aware it's like two pages long and everyone dies. They appear in Fantastic Four #563.
Key points -- Sue is referred to as Reed's sister-in-law, Johnny is named Jack Richards. Johnny also attempts to kill the Marquis of Death after he rips Reed's heart out. Millar did later confirm (iirc) that this was a ReedJohnny married universe, but in the actual comic it's more context clues than outright stated.
