‘Look, Kaito-nii!’ When Kaito turns around, Rin puts on her best smile and waves at him from her perch on the monkey bars. ‘I’m taller than you now!’
Much to her disappointment, Kaito doesn’t seem very impressed with how far she’s climbed – instead, he just looks like he’s eaten too many sour oranges in one sitting. ‘Rin, no, get down from there – that’s very dangerous!’
Rin pouts. If Len can walk up the slide and stay there at the top to steal all of Kaito’s attention, then she’s going to stay right here until he comes over to her. ‘No way!’
‘C’mon, Rin… please?’
Kaito sounds tired. She feels bad for being so stubborn, but then Len climbs down the slide and gives her the stink-eye behind Kaito’s back, making her fume all over again. ‘No, no, no, no – WAH!’
Someone’s carrying her now – it’s Kaito’s really pretty lady friend, the one with soft brown hair and an even softer smile. ‘Hi, sweetie. Are you hurt?’
Rin shakes her head, thoroughly mystified by her sudden appearance. Kaito scrambles towards them, a sulky Len in one arm and his Magical Bag of Everything in the other. ‘Oh, thank god,’ he sighs. ‘I owe you a lunch, Meiko.’
‘Nah, don’t worry about it,’ she laughs. ‘Just glad she’s safe. How’s everything?’
He sighs again, louder this time, but Rin notices that he doesn’t seem so tired anymore. It reminds her of her mama and papa, who make each other feel better whenever they’re together.
Meiko raises her eyebrows. ‘What did you – hey, hey,’ she cuts herself off when Rin wiggles back and forth in her arms to catch her attention. ‘Hey, sweetie, what’s wrong?’
‘When you and Kaito-nii get married, can I be your bridesmaid?’
Everyone stops to stare at her – including Len, who’s still tucked under Kaito’s arm – but Rin takes their silence as acceptance, nodding sagely.
‘I’ll be sure to do my best, Meiko-nee, Kaito-nii!’
