Idle Race -Girl At The Window. Uploaded by youngfella16
The Idle Race was the Birmingham band that Jeff Lynne first came to public attention with. The band had previously been called Mike Sheridan and the Nightriders and included Roy Wood. Jeff Lynne was recruited in 1966, a few months after Roy left to form the Move. The band was much loved of John Peel and Kenny Everett and garnered favourable press but success eluded them. Roger Spencer of the band spoke in a 1995 documentary on 'BrumBeat' about how the 'pats on the back' were actually wearing Jeff down. Eventually Jeff accepted a second offer from Roy Wood to join the Move in 1970 and they started planning the Electric light Orchestra. I wonder if he could have known when he wrote this song with its references to 'John and Paul and Ringo and George' 'playing lovely tunes' that he would become a close friend and collaborator with George and go on to produce The Beatles tracks 'Free as a bird' 'Real love' in the 1990's
