The biggest surprise so far
[Versione italiana in basso] The first months of Ischia Dolphin Project have flown! Among sightings of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus), striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) and seabirds, lessons of sailing and photo identification, we had the biggest surprise so far: the sighting of two sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), an "old acquaintance" and a new individual!
The "old acquaintance" is our beloved Brunone, sighted many times this June, generally in the morning and in the act of feeding.
Together with Brunone, our research team has sighted another animal, which has been identified by the photo-ID as a new individual! Our catalog grows bigger and more data is collected about this species, whose Mediterranean population is listed as 'endangered' by the IUCN Red List. Enjoy Brunone in all his beauty in this video!

I primi 2 mesi di Ischia Dolphin Project 2017 sono volati! Tra avvistamenti di tursiopi (Tursiops truncatus), grampi (Grampus griseus), stenelle striate (Stenella coeruleoalba) e uccelli marini, lezioni di marineria e di catalogazione, spicca però un evento emozionante che difficilmente potrà essere superato: l’avvistamento di due esemplari di capodoglio (Physeter macrocephalus), una “vecchia conoscenza” e un nuovo individuo!
La “vecchia conoscenza” è il nostro amato Brunone, avvistato più volte nel mese di giugno, di mattina, generalmente in fase di alimentazione. Insieme a lui, la nostra squadra di ricercatori e volontari ha avvistato un altro esemplare, che la foto-identificazione ha confermato essere un nuovo individuo! Cresce cosi il numero di capodogli presenti nel nostro catalogo: la popolazione mediterranea di questa specie è classificata come “minacciata” dalla Red List dell’IUCN!
