Closing the 2019 field season in Ischia!
The last two weeks of the season have just finished and we could not have asked for better volunteers and a better time on the Jean Gab than we had this year!
Although the first week was without sightings, the final week of the season started out with a spectacular first day: The volunteers hadn’t even finished all the morning duties on board when Captain Angelo received a call: Someone had seen dolphins, and they weren’t far away! So without further do the team quickly got everything ready and the Jean Gab set out towards the Procida channel. Few minutes later, they spotted them – bottlenose dolphins!
This was a beautiful surprise for everyone at the beginning of the week, and our three volunteers who had already been on Jean Gab the previous week were finally rewarded for their patience and hard work in the past days.
The group spent a while with the animals before heading on – to the next sighting of the day. It didn’t take long before they spotted the next group of dolphins, this time striped dolphins!
It was not the only time this species was spotted during the week.. Already on the next day they encountered another group – with a few calves among them! The next generation of dolphins is on its way, and we will hopefully see them again next year and continue studying them as they grow in this area.
From the mid of the week unfortunately the weather started to become unstable and the Jean Gab stayed in the harbour for two days. This was the perfect opportunity for the volunteers to learn something more about the scientific background of the project! Davide, the researcher on Jean Gab, made sure that even without going out, the volunteers learned many interesting things about the world of whales and dolphins. They also had the chance to listen to some acoustic recordings as well as learning about their feeding behaviour. Being in Ischia, all this intellectual input was balanced out with a visit to our local spa, O’Vagnitiello where the volunteers could enjoy the thermal baths and relax from the work on the boat.
Davide also had the chance to talk at the Blue Blitz 2019 event organized by the Regno di Nettuno marine protected area that is located in the waters of Ischia. Here he explained the work Oceanomare Delphis Onlus is carrying out as well as drawing attention to some of the issues the marine mammals are facing in the Mediterranean Sea and specifically around Ischia. On Sunday, we said goodbye to our last group of volunteers from Australia, the UK, France, Spain and the US over a last Aperol Spritz in the harbour of Ischia. As always it was a wonderful and bonding time and we cannot thank all the participants of this season enough for supporting our project and enjoying with us the adventures of the Jean Gab.
If you would like to learn more about the work Oceanomare Delphis Onlus conducts, or the specific work at the Ischia Dolphin Project check out our page which is linked below. And if you are ready for a lifetime experience among the whales and dolphins around Ischia we would be more than happy to welcome you on board next season!
