Because the Night - Bruce Springsteen (Toronto, July 26, 1984)

Let me try to explain Springsteen to people from outside of New Jersey. I consider myself a Springsteen fan, in the same way I am a fan of, I dunno, trees or air-conditioning. That is, I didn't really have any say in the matter, because it's always just been there.

My mom's favorite album when I was a kid was Born in the USA, and in the car she would play dubbed tapes of The River and the 75-85 Box set. In high school my English teacher used "Growin Up" as a model for us to write narrative poetry. My school's prom theme was Dancing In The Dark.

During my summer job in college the owner would play the CD of In Concert: MTV PLUGGED every day. After graduation I worked at a bookstore where the manager would only allow the early "New Dylan" Greetings From Asbury Park and E Street Shuffle, because everything after that was for "sellouts".

My buddy waited on Bruce at Restoriation Hardware and got a selfie with him. One time I was walking on the boardwalk and a stranger stopped me and said in a hushed whisper "He's doing a fan club show at the Pony tonight." Completely unprompted.

Yeah we have My Chemical Romance and Gaslight Anthem and Danzig and everything else, but Springsteen is in a whole other league.

He's not just our friendly neighborhood rock star; Down the shore Bruce is a mythical creature, like the Jersey Devil or Santa Claus. If you're lucky you just might have an encounter.

as someone who was (sadly) limited in my bruce exposure, I need to know: what got you into him as an artist? and no, this isn't me being indoctrinated into bruce by your man collection...psh obviously...of course not... 🖤

But seriously I am not a super fan but I really love him and I hope one day I get to see him live. He still has a lot of energy now and he's doing everything he can with it. He has such a broad musical taste too and incorporates it into his performances. I enjoy his album The Seeger Sessions where he goes into old folk music. He just always looks like he's having fun.

He was one of the first champions of the electronic rock band Suicide who paved the way for modern alt music. I fucking cry so hard listening to this ahhh

great thing about bruce is he got old and rich but he didn't change he's still working man pro-union pro-giving men feelings and so many old boomers HATE HIM

like he has this contingent of "piss on the poor reading comprehension" fans that bemoan how "liberal and soft he is now" and it's like no grandpa your heart just fucking died that's what happened

Ronald Regan famously used his anti-war song 'Born in the USA' and the awful guys of his ilk really like Bruce and his work on surface level and Bruce is always like "nah man you fucking suck please can you read my lyrics for five seconds" He called the orange one a "toxic narcissist moron" when that one decided to use born in the USA for his own shit.

Anyway Bruce got this very masculine aura but he has a lot of vulnerability in his songs and performance style, like he is very aware of how the patriarchy affects the emotional side of men. Like men aren't allowed to have deep bonds with each other, have mental illness or show their emotions. He had a platonic "soul mate" Clarence Clemons who he truly truly loved. *Intensely Claws your shoulders and stares deep into your eyes like an insane oracle* REVE THEY TRULY LOVED EACH OTHER

So uhh he's kind of what I based my young Primo on and my Primo I feel would be this type of performer in a different life.... I am writing a shorter post-Violence & Gentleness fic entitled "Adam Raised a Cain" (a song from my favorite album of Bruce's 'Darkness on the Edge of Town')

I don’t trust men who only like Nebraska. The cover just looks cool with the rest of your hardcore records and it’s been deemed societally acceptable to have a feeling while listening to it, but if you really were in touch with them you’d be able to cry during the sax solo in Born in the U.S.A. too because that song is just as bleak, devastating, lonely and viciously anti-imperialist; you’re just afraid of the ass-centric iconography surrounding it

Now, I'm not the biggest Bruce Springsteen fan- I like his stuff, but I only really know the greatest hits. But I'm from New Jersey. So I, of course, know to show reverence to New Jersey's Favorite Son. We all have the saxophone solo from Born to Run tattooed on our backs, you know how it is.

So. In 2018, a college friend got two student rush tickets to the Tony Awards, and she was kind enough to invite me. That year Bruce Springsteen did his one-man Broadway show, so they were giving him an honorary Tony Award.

It gets to the point that they start introducing Bruce and his award. I turned to my friend and said "This is about to be the most New Jersey you're ever going to see me. I'm so sorry." And when they said "the honorary Tony goes to Bruce Springsteen" I, along with about a quarter of the room who were from New Jersey, got up on my feet to yell "BRUUUUUUUUUCE"
