The Mosley Review: Ready or Not
I am truly loving the horror genre right now. There seems to be an endless amount of premises that can easily be turned into a horror comedy and sometimes just a thrill ride with some genuine scares. The idea of hide and seek is scary on its own because some people get too into the game and end up going missing. This film doesn't go that direction, but it sometimes goes down a predictable route and yet there's still so much bloody good fun to be had. I liked that there was history within the film's plot that didn't feel so tacked on and really fleshed out the family and how twisted things are. It's a running joke that rich people, with all their wealth, decide to go on a murder spree or join some kind of cult because they’re bored. Well in this film, they hit it home in some gruesome and truly dark humorous ways.
Samara Weaving is an actress I'm starting to become a fan of. As Grace she was fantastic and as she really wanted to be accepted into the family, but then she finds out the horrific truth. I truly loved her reactions and perseverance through all the rough things that happen to her in the film. After this film I might consider her a new scream queen for this generation. Mark O' Brien plays her husband Alex Le Domas and I thought he was just as great. I felt his love for her and the chemistry was strong from the beginning. Adam Brody plays his brother Daniel Le Domas and I loved that he was the one in the family with a conscience. Melanie Scrofano and Kristian Bruun as Emilie Le Domas and Fitch Bradley were hilarious in their own ways and bought some levity to the tone of the film. Andie MacDowell is always a class act and as Helene Le Domas she had a more nurturing feel to her. Nicky Guadagni as Helene Le Domas exuded all kinds of evil and she really held up the traditions of the family. Henry Czerny as Tony De Lomas just chewed up the scenery in many great scenes and I loved his intensity throughout.
The score by Bryan Tyler was outstanding and really punched up the thrilling moments and punctuated the darker hilarious moments. There were some twist and turns that were fun to explore and some truly great gruesome moments. The dark comedy in the film was expertly executed and I did love the design of the house itself. Overall, this film was exactly as fun and blood soaked as I hoped it would be and I loved every bit of it. So if you're in the mood for some good scares, fun thrills and some dark humor, then look no further. Definitely check this one out!
