The Secret at Madden Manor: Prologue

Clementine had met Chrissy, of all places, at the theatre. Clementine was an actress, and playing the love interest of the musical play she was in. It was a tragedy—she dies in her lover’s arms at the end, but then of course she does. Isn’t that what happens in all good plays?

The theatre was low-budget, didn’t seat too many people, and Clementine always loved looking out across the audience because of this. She could directly see the faces of everybody who had watched, and see if they enjoyed it. It was on one such night that, from the middle row of seats, Clementine caught the eyes of somebody in particular.

Green eyes surrounded by dark, overdramatic makeup (although she found out later that the purple eyeshadow he was wearing that night was brighter than the usual black), and what Clementine now playfully calls his “rail me" red lipstick, she couldn’t take her eyes off of this person. A tight lace jacket with dramatic cuffs on the sleeves, fishnets and tiny leather shorts, he cut an interesting figure. There was something about him, something indescribable.

She no longer felt like the star in the room.

Of course, he came to stop by her dressing room and congratulate her after the show, because he thought he was important enough to do that—he was absolutely loaded, as she found out, and even more stunning up close, with thick dark curls reaching to his neck in some places. She was immediately quite taken with him, although she didn’t want to date him exactly.

It was slightly off-putting when he began to ruthlessly flirt with her co-star and friend, Brydon, too.

That was the way things were, though, and the way they always would be. His name was Chrissy Hendrix-Madden, and he took both her and Brydon home that night.
