Web Accessibility 1
I’m learning more about web accessibility, here’s the result of a brief first read around on the web:
Wikipedia comes up with a summary of important web accessibility topics:
Semantically meaningful HTML and text alternatives for images helps blind users using text to speech software
Links should be emphacised strongly (lines and different colour), again to help those with sight issues.
making link areas large helps those with mouse precision problems
navigation via keyboard alone is helpful for those with mouse problems
captions or text alternatives for audio help those with hearing issues
flashing of any kind should be avoided for those with seizures.
There’s also guidelines from the WAI (web accessibility initiative). and a British Standard (BS 8878). The British Standard not only defines technical characteristics, it also goes into detail of how to get an organisation to work to the standard.
