It’s so intriguing to watch a show for the first time without being aware of any of the general fandom consensus of it.  Then when you start observing the fandom, you discover they all seem to follow the same set of opinions. Usually, the polar opposite of your own. I’ve discovered that people hate things that weird, confuse them or aren’t immediately explained. Dawn in season 5, “Restless”, “Superstar”... the list goes on. I love things that are confusing or weird. What makes anything interesting is wondering “What does that do?” and then finding out. People get to season 5 and aren’t immediately told what is going so they get annoyed and ask others about it. Patience is key. Haven’t you ever heard of a twist? Mysteries are what keep things interesting. And I don’t understand the anger about it either. I love “Restless”  and it’s my favorite episode in the series but I have found some hate it because it’s weird and confusing. That’s why I like it. I love the foreshadowing and all the random things in it… how it really feels like the way dreams feel. I’ve always found dreams so fascinating. I know someone who told me they don’t like it because “It seems pointless and made no sense” but what fun is there in making sense?

lmao at Buffy listening to Jonathan’s relationship advice re: forgiving Riley during “Superstar” as if that’s a good idea. Jonathan, whose whole schtick is that he is a loser, alone, not successful socially, and never been in a relationship. that’s the guy you take advice from? but okay, even if his point wasn’t blatantly - “go to him girlie!” we do finish the episode with Buffy telling Jonathan that quick fixes aren’t real, life is complicated, solutions are slow and you need to talk things out. which he says was his point to her about Riley. and then she ignores all that, doesn’t talk at all, just forgives and jumps into bed with him 🤦‍♀️

Johnathan showing up all through the title sequence in Superstar had me cackling, and has solidified this show as a total favourite of mine

I wonder if the “superstar” episode would’ve worked better in season 5 or 6 due to its final message. I mean obviously it would be a little more difficult to fit in a lighthearted episode like it with the darker overall themes of the later seasons, but it concludes with Buffy telling Jonathan that quick magical fixes aren’t real and don’t lead to good endings. That life is complicated and slow and you need to work and talk things through to grow and evolve. (Or something to that effect.)

Which could have been an excellent nod to how Willow looks for the quick fix of magic to solve her problems (after the breakup with Oz, fighting with Tara etc.) How the magic solution isn’t real or worth it due to the inevitable pain it can cause. Or Willow could’ve remembered how violating it is to be the one under someone else’s magical influence or suffer the consequences of the spell in question. Not sure, just idle thoughts.
