random thought of the day: it’s hard loving spuffy and bangel because the vast majority of the fandom seems to love one and hate the other so finding decent meta on one that doesn’t tear the other down is remarkably difficult.

I've got a dilemma. I have three new rp partners who've never seen BtVS and want to get to know Faith, and so skip to season three.
But, how do I let them skip seasons one and two? Anne won't make sense. Beauty and the Beasts won't make sense. None of it will hurt like it's supposed to.
They'll miss The Harvest and Angel and The Witch and Lie to Me. When She Was Bad and School Hard and Surprise and Innocence and Passion and Becoming 1 & 2. How can I, as a pal, let them skip becoming emotionally invested in these characters and head right to Faith when there's so much that happens before she arrives in Sunnydale? I feel like I’d be cheating them out of something.
But, being a good friend and advising them to watch the whole series up 'til she shows means a good, long while before plots and threads and such. Dilemma!
I think I'm going to suggest they watch the whole thing. I sort of want them to cry when they hear Full of Grace. Is that wrong? lol

I actually love the contrast between spike and angel when it comes to having/not having a soul because ... ok, in this universe, a soul is something external to a being right? And beings have some kind of intrinsic personality: we see a full gamut of soulless vampires from Harmony to Spike to Angelus and they’re all very different. It’s like … no matter what is foist upon you, vampirism (soullnessness) or some kind of externally imposed morality/conscience, you can [curse the ask limit, 1/2]
choose who and how you are which means no matter who or how you are there’s the possibility of change. (Which is something I personally equate to hope, and I like the less fatalistic take on souls and immortality.) But, like, 100% with you on everything else.
I mean, this is a really good point because I definitely do like that people have personalities whether they’re souled or soulless. But the reason I think the way they’ve done it is bad is because it muddies the show’s internal morality. If a soulless vampire can have a nice personality, then suddenly what Buffy’s doing by stabbing through the heart newly reborn vampires who have had no chance to show who they are is actually a pretty horrible thing to do. You bring up Harmony as an example which is great because I loooooove vampirical Harmony so much, and as a result I wouldn’t think staking her was a morally justifiable act? In Angel she commits to a human blood free diet because her friends think it’s the right thing to do, she becomes a part of their fight against evil, she shows herself to be capable of good deeds where the motivation is there. I don’t buy that she inherently deserves to die! And while greyish morality is something I appreciate in my fiction I think in this case it ends up completely undermining the foundation of the show, which is that the slayer is a good person who does altruistic things for the benefit of the world and humanity. Does that make sense?
I find that as soon as I start thinking about it with any depth, rather than just taking the killing-something-without-a-soul=good thing at fact value, I realize that I don’t really agree with what Buffy’s doing and it goes against everything that I believe in, as I’m strongly and passionately against the death sentence in every context and for every crime. And that makes the show less enjoyable for me.
It is a joke she made, since Anya is from Scandinavia, so was never a little girl in America, since she was as old as she was in 860, nearly a thousand years before Independence Day.
Yeah that’s what I thought. Thanks anon!
buffy summers for ask meme! but also dawn? if that would be more interesting for you to talk about. OR BOTH, if you're feeling really wild.
i will do them both!
002 | Buffy Summers
How I feel about this character: Buffy Summers is one of the greatest heroes of all time. She is so strong but also goes so far beyond the Strong Female Character™ that people complain about. She’s flawed in a way that makes her the perfect protagonist really.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: I mean I’ve reblogged Buffy/Spike, Buffy/Angel and Buffy/Faith things but there’s a lot of things I don’t like about Buffy/Spike. If I ever read the comics I think I will ship Buffy/Satsu, they interest me a lot although I’ve heard it’s not that rewarding as a relationship :(
My non-romantic OTP for this character: This is gonna be a long list... Buffy/Joyce, Buffy/Dawn, Buffy/Giles, Buffy/Willow, Buffy/Cordelia, Buffy/Tara, Buffy/Faith
My unpopular opinion about this character: I mean I think that not liking Buffy/Spike puts me in the minority, there’s nothing else I can really think of.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I can’t deal with her getting kicked out of the house in season 7. Burn that scene to the ground.
my OTP: BUFFY/HAPPINESS
my cross over ship: For a second I was like, huh what if Buffy met John Crichton? But I think maybe they’re too similar to work? Idk.
a headcanon fact: I just realized this is very similar to my Cordelia headcanon but the end of Chosen, where Dawn says “What are we gonna do now Buffy?” or whatever? Buffy responds, “I’m going to re-enrol in university.” It makes me sad because she was so excited to go to college, so proud when she started excelling at her psychology class, and she worked so hard to get there, obviously there were good reasons for her to leave because of Joyce, but it’s really important to me that she gets to go back and have another chance, especially because now there are heaps of other slayers to take care of things while she has a bit of time to do what’s right for her.
002 | Dawn Summers
How I feel about this character: She’s such a darling! A precious sweetheart and I can’t understand anyone who doesn’t like her.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Nil. Definitely definitely definitely not Xander.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Buffy/Dawn, Tara/Dawn, Joyce/Dawn, WIllow/Tara/Dawn, Giles/Dawn, Clem/Dawn
My unpopular opinion about this character: I don’t know how unpopular this is but I want her to stay as far away from both Xander and Spike as possible, neither of them deserve to come anywhere near her.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: Well I think they could have put more emphasis on how intelligent she is. Because it’s there, she says early in season five “Willow’s the only person I know who loves school as much as me” and then in season seven she’s doing some hardcore studying for the gang, but I would have liked some kind of story that centred around Dawn being a little bby genius, like she comes head of her class and Joyce makes a fuss and Buffy gets a bit jealous or something? (This is why I’m not a television writer)
my OTP: None.
my cross over ship: Idk, maybe Wesley Crusher???
a headcanon fact: her favourite colour is purple and she has a fear of caterpillars

It’s a transparent attempt to show us that a character who was purposely obtuse in previous seasons is actually (out of nowhere) the one who “sees things.” makes me roll my eyes so hard.
i like the way you think. this didn’t occur to me but you’re so right! since when has xander shown any sort of observational skill whatsoever?
also just that hammy extended pause he puts after “you’re not special” so that he can really grind her self confidence down before saying something nice, what an arsehole.
