Okay, I am of a delicate constitution about wlw pairings these days because there are more canon ones than ever but I feel like I keep watching them crash and burn spectacularly. That said, should I watch Hacks? I was going to wait until it was over, but it seems to still be going (and I am considering just watching the episode in Singapore alone because gotta rep). What do you think? Everything I know I know by osmosis.

OK, so, right off the bat: they are not canon, and they will not be canon. (If I'm wrong I'll happily eat crow!) That being said, while they aren't "a canon wlw pairing" as we think of them, their relationship is crucial to the narrative of the show, and every episode is about them and their relationship (with maybe one or two exceptions). To me, they are fanon in the same kind of way that Xena/Gabrielle are, meaning that while they aren't textually in a romantic relationship and they aren't physically intimate (well, Xena got some kisses in there and there is a Hacks dream sequence kiss), their love and care for each other is communicated in so many grand gestures and powerful dialogue that it's so much better than what we get from 99% of canon wlw pairings. (Alright, off my fanon/canon soapbox now! 🤭)

As for your second question of if you should watch: Yes!!!! Considering how good you are at theme, narrative, and character analyses, I feel like Hacks will be so much fun for you to dig into! It is genuinely one of the best shows I've ever seen (both just as a story and also specifically as use of television as a medium), so even excluding the Ava/Deborah aspect (which, as mentioned before, you literally can't because that is the show!) it's worth a watch. The show is so intentionally written and thoughtfully crafted, it just feels good to watch it (much like Leverage!). Also, I laugh SO HARD, it's just a good time.

(Also as a completionist I cannot recommend watching the Singapore episode on its own - though it IS beautiful, wow! - because Hacks is an emotional rollercoaster and that episode is OOOF when you've ridden the ride up to it!)

And, to confirm, we just finished season 4, and the series was originally planned to be 5 seasons. The creators have recently reconfirmed that 5 is the plan still, but did say they'll extend it if one more season isn't enough to finish it up with the right pacing. So, it isn't done but it's close-ish if you want to wait about a year ❤️

with the caveat that there are some tropes that simply don't work for some pairings and not all pairings should be forced into particular tropes, i do enjoy: enemies to lovers; there was only one bed; huddling for warmth.

31. What was the most difficult fic for you to write (but in the end you made it)?

so back in 2012 i wrote a code name verity fic for yuletide, No Such Roses, and i haaaaaated writing it and i haaaaaaated it after i finished it and i didn't even answer any of the comments on it because i thought it was so shit, but uh, actually it's not terrible? it came out pretty well.  but at the time i was trying to write a story in an incredibly depressing canon, and i was incredibly depressed, and i just felt like nothing was getting across the feelings i wanted to go for.

(the real answer to this is probably in some of the things i've given up on, but, you know.)

39. Wildest AU scenario you have written?

i don't really write the coffee-shop type AUs; mine are all the 'one thing in canon is slightly different' type. so i'm not sure 'wildest' applies. but 'wildest' in that i can't believe i finished it and made it work is the almost-30k Grace & Frankie s1 bedsharing AU i wrote for yuletide 2017, you will continue to need (which i am still quite proud of).

What’s the first thing they usually do to get the other’s attention?

For both of them, it's usually just calling the other person's name. Hardison sometimes gets hyperfocused on stuff and won't notice, and Sophie's usual move is just to get louder. She will stay sitting on the couch, repeating, "Hardison. Hardison! Hardison. HARDISON," for a while before making any move to get up. Sometimes she's still forced to go actually touch him on the shoulder, but usually patience and noisiness will do the trick. It's unclear if this habit originated in her or Parker, but they both do it sometimes.

Hardison will sometimes, if Sophie seems engaged in listening to something/watching TV/on the phone, attempt not to disturb her while still getting her attention. This means stage-whispers, dramatic but silent waving about with his arms, flickering the lights if he has a switch or computer handy, etc. It always without fail disturbs her much more than just talking normally would have.

How comfortable are they with touching/being touched by the other?

They're both comfortable with being touched, although Sophie less so at the beginning, but don't tend to initiate a ton of touch with one another. When they do, it's usually Hardison. They tend to be casual, no huge gestures, just shoulders bumping, etc. But there has been a slow but steady increase of hugs over the years, and Sophie will sometimes put a hand on his cheek when she's feeling super fond and maternal.

Describe how they walk together (i.e., matching strides, holding hands, etc).

Depends on the situation. In a con, Sophie's walk is part of her character and won't change. But just casually walking around, she might walk a little faster than usual to match his pace. He also slows down a little without thinking about it, and they often fall into a matching stride. This happens extra fast when they're doing a Cool Gloat Walk (tm), but will usually end up the case regardless.

i used to live near an actual lush store and was routinely tempted but it was so long ago now i can’t remember the names of any of them. now i pour epsom salt from a bag into my bathtub like the boring adult i am because i’m scared the tub won’t drain properly and i’ll need to hire a plumber and being the exact amount of adult that let me dive headfirst into debt to live in the vicinity of a lush store and other trendy hipster essentials was fun but being the amount of adult where i own a house and worry about the state of plumbing is honestly more stressful than i anticipated. this ask has highlighted for me exactly where i went wrong in life.
