Bubaque, 2018 Our trip home each day was a two part series. A bumpy 15 min truck ride, followed by a short boat ride from Bubaque to the neighboring island. Roughly cut white stone steps, lead from the road to the sandy cove that hosts causal sunbathers enjoying the last bits of golden light and warm bath water. As I sit on the soft sand, I, finally feel the weight of the day-- and all the sweat that the sun has soaked into my body. The sand feels silky and light, and the shade is welcoming and soothing after a full day of hot island sun. The sound of the light splash of the tide is kind and calming and lets me drift in to the quiet waters as we wait. Bubaque, 2018 I assumed my usual spot in the back of the truck. It was the end of the day and the ritual of loading in gear and waiting to leave allowed me to sit for a minute. A constant sense of motion fills each day…a motion that wavers between a rush to get the shot followed by a pause to wait for the story to unfold. The near-end of the day, is a time I often looked forward to--it allowed me to sit and observe all the movement around me--listen to the layers of conversations and have silent exchanges without a camera in my hand. A moment when I could be fully present, and I could do both --give and absorb. At times, I would allow myself to believe that I had camouflaged into the back of the truck . I enjoy becoming small. A slow trickle of energies fills the space as people step into the trunk and find a place to sit. Each time that it appears we have filled capacity, another person enters...the puzzle shifts and we all fit. Bubaque, 2018 ( Guinea Bissau) We had just finished the third day of shooting and we were loading into the pick up truck to head back to the boat. Rides do not come by on the regular, so, if there is space in the vehicle…it will be filled quickly. I always sit in the open back —the air is fresh and the view is clear, no constraints. The sides of the back are lined with people siting on the edges, carefully, placing their feet amongst the rest of us who have packed into the interior. A slow nuanced game of foot wiggling and butt adjustments is in constant action to lightly buffer the sensations of an unpaved road. Proximity is close and familiarity is distant, yet there is a shared understanding of creating comfort for one another on the only ride in town. The length of the ride varies for each passenger, some interactions for just a moment and others ride to the end. She and I shared a space, a tiny space for the whole duration—behind her in the corner, her little sister scrunched and would occasionally pop her head up to catch a glimpse. Yet, she held her space--no adjustments-- with such kind assurance.
