Today I will be revisiting my favorite theme to write about - Christmas Haul Photos! The quality of this photo is poor, but that did not stop me from trying to decipher just what the hell I got for Christmas that year. 1979 was a non Star Wars movie year which resulted in my parents not knowing exactly what to get me. As you can see from this photo, they apparently went through the aisles of Toys R Us blindfolded, randomly grabbing whatever they ran into.
Batman & Robin - Mego Worlds Greatest Heroes - If my parents were trying to theme that years Christmas, it would have been Superheroes. Being 3 at the time, I was trusting that whatever Santa got me is what I should be into even though I didn’t know anything about comic books. Truthfully, I did not really get into Superheroes until Batman the Movie came out a decade later. The Mego Superhero line briefly held my interest until Empire Strikes Back came out and ruined all other toy lines for me. I do not remember owning these for very long. My last memory of Mego Batman is throwing him into a giant leaf pile and losing him. He vanished on contact never to be seen again. The sad thing is that i’m not sure I even cared that much. Maybe thats why I was throwing him into the leaf pile to begin with? Sorry Mego Batman.
Big Wheels & Batman Tricycle - Ok, this is where I begin to realize that my parents clearly did not have a plan this Christmas. Just exactly was the reasoning behind getting me two ride on toys with the exact same color scheme? Did they figure I would outgrow one quickly and then instantly need the bigger one? Anyway, that Big Wheel was simply the best outdoor toy. I rode that everyday all summer long. Eventually the plastic on Big Wheels gets sanded down until it disintegrates rendering it unusable. Just remember never to put your feet back behind the pedals and “cruise” like I did which resulted in my feet dragging on hot asphalt causing insane 1st degree burns.
Lego Basic Building Set - 110 Pieces - What needs to be written that has not already been written about the most essential toy every child should have? Apparently at least another paragraph is what! This set quickly made its way into my Lego Bucket. If you did not use a household bucket for your lego toys then you may need to get yourself examined. I was not the most imaginative kid when it came to Legos. I would mostly try to build the obvious tallest lego tower or try to mimic the designs on the packaging. Years later Santa brought me a Lego Spaceship which my dad decided to pre-build for me. When I saw the giant box I was insanely excited.......until I looked next to it and saw it was already built. Instant tears on Christmas morning.
Daredevil Sport Van - Fisher Price Adventure People - For those of you who have been reading my blog (Nobody) you have already read about my intense appreciation of this toy. What I did not know at the time of that article is exactly when I got this toy. This mystery is now solved even though this picture has brought forth new mysteries that I will go into at the end of this blog.
Superadventure Colorforms Set - Out of all the toys pictured here, I may have played with this the most. Colorforms would keep me busy for hours on end. I loved creating my own scenes with the reusable “stickers”. Pieces of this set remained in my toy box right up until when my family sold the house. It was not a toy box at that point but a giant storage of household junk with toy parts mixed in.
Bubbletron - Micronauts - Ok, let me preface this by saying that I spend nearly 2 days trying to figure out what the hell this was. I was definitely not into the Micronauts and I certainly ddid not remember owning anything from that line. After hours of staring I made out that it was a Micronauts package. After that I simply needed to google Micronauts toys and instantly find out what it was. NOPE. I searched and searched and nothing looked like the picture. From my point of view it looked like a black blob wearing a crash helmet, and Crash Helmet Blob was not part of the 1979 Micronauts line. Frustrated I gave up and decided I was just not going to blog about this picture. The next day I decided to stare at the picture again until I developed the ability to read really small print from old photographs and figured out it said BUBBLETRON on the package. Ahhhhhh, BUBBLETRON. This by the way solidified the fact that my parents mailed this Christmas in. I have the faintest of memories of this thing. I remember soaking my hands from the bubbles coming out and that it was very heavy.
Random Western Toy Gun Set - I tried to find this on the internet but was not able to determine who made it or what the name was. American Army Double Holster Set? It really does not matter because I hated this. That year my mom asked me if there was anything I did not like. So I said yes and ran over to pick up the Western guns and handed it to her. She then looked at me and asked if I was sure. I said yes. She then took it and stuffed it under the couch. At the time, I did not understand why she did that as I still believed in Santa and he gave that to me. I was like, even though I did not like it, it was still mine. The next day I looked under the couch only to discover it was gone. It went back to Toys R Us.
Everything Else - Ok, so I could not decipher all of the images and will turn to the internet for help:
Race Car Thing - Located in front of the Daredevil Sports Van. Its Yellow, big and has the number 48 stickers on the side.
Spider-Man Toy - This could be anything as I can only see part of Spider-Mans body swinging. Located behind my back.
Red Truck Type Thing - If anyone gets this, then they will win the internet. Located in front of the unknown yellow sport car.
Musical Instrument - I remember this toy but I would love to find out who made it and what it was called so that I can buy it and give it to my Sister for Christmas this year.
Lite Brite - Ok, I was originally not going to mention this as it was not my toy but I decided to do it anyway since this blog is already a million words long. This was my sisters toy and my sister did not let me play with her toys........ever. Looking back, I can’t blame her as I would probably have destroyed it. My family did not believe in buying the same toy twice so certain toys, even though they may have been a toy standard for other children, ended up being off limits to me. I remember admiring Lite Brite from afar and waiting for a moment to sneak in and play with it. Unfortunately for me, once you play with a sheet of Lite Brite paper, it becomes used since you need to poke holes through it. I was busted the second my sister went back into her room. I have not touched a Lite Brite since.
